Completely changes the experience of working in Live.
I make music for fun. I don't even think I'm very good at it, but I can spend hours and hours making loops, adding layers and sampling stuff on Ableton Live.This product allowed me spend a lot less time using the mouse, specially once I get most of my samples down and want to start stitching things together. I love the lights, feel of the buttons and actually focusing on the music, and the flow of things instead of running with the mouse to activate clips.I have also tried using it as a step sequencer and it's a lot of fun. At the price it's at right now, it's a great option for people like me.

Emulates the Monome 40h at a fifth of the price. Launches Live clips as expected
The launchpad is an elegant and minimal grid of 64 buttons. Unlike the Ableton grid controller, the launchpad's 8x8 grid of buttons makes it a perfect device for emulating the Monome and running any of the many Monome apps. Search for "nonome" and you will find plenty of information on turning the launchpad into a universal grid controller.The only downside seems to be that the Launchpad requires a driver, and that it speaks slow MIDI rather than the faster and more flexible OSC protocol. The compact Novation Launchpad is designed to give electronic music makers the most interactive experience possible in Ableton Live. Mostly A Great Clip Launcher
I have owned one of these for four months and have gotten a good grasp of its relative strengths and weaknesses. The Launchpad is a natural extension for Live's Session View. There is just enough visual information implanted on the interface for you to identify clips easily. The User1 User2 modes are great for a few MIDI triggers but lack any serious expression as the pads themselves aren't velocity sensitive. The mixer mode might be useful for some but I never touch it due to the limited resolution of expression and the immediacy required for their proper function (if minimalism is your goal in this department, seek the ). Worth every penny
Ableton Live is both brilliantly intuitive and incredibly complex. All you have to do is start with a couple of their built-in lessons and you'll be off and running. I've been working with it for a few months now, I learn something new every time I use it, and I've barely scratched the surface of what it's capable of. Anything's possible. Reasonable Intro to the more dense official User Manual
I bought this book when I bought Ableon Live 8 Suite, and I had never used the software before. I read a lot of technical texts -- mostly software / computer texts, and I am just now getting into DAW stuff for fun. The book is more like a slimmed down version of the very large official Ableton User Manual PDF. It is more readable, and more narrative than the PDF, but not really by all that much.It follows a particular style for technical texts that I don't care for much, which is to have chapters that just describe each function/feature of the software in a linear fashion. It doesn't promote learning all that well, b/c you tend to get bored just reading about feature after feature without being more interactive. It has available some live sets that you can download and there are a few areas in the book where it prompts you to try things, but not many.By comparison, I also have the book Reason 4 Ignite by Matt Piper (also Cengage Learning), and it takes a...

They could have renamed the Title
I actually bought a PDF format of this "Ableton Live 8 Power!" book online so I don't have a paperback or hardcover physically in my hands, but what I can give you is a brief overview of what's in the book. I recently switched from Avid's Pro Tools 9 to Ableton's Live 8 Suite (No I'm not crazy, Live is just a better DAW for the type of music I produce). So, obviously whenever you open up Live, you get confused and start to think how the heck does this work? I'm sure you've all seen Youtube video's of how easy users make Live seem, and honestly after reading up to Chapter 6 of this book, it is!The first half of this book introduces you to the most basic concepts in Live such as the Arrangement and Session views. The chapters are very long and concepts that are touched on in earlier chapters are repeated in the following chapters (again, and again, and again). I recommend skipping around the book if you really need to know about a specific feature in Live. The book goes on...

Good but basic
I recently started using Ableton Live 8 Suite as the main DAW for my home studio. This is an incredible program that can be used in a plethora of ways. I selected this book in hopes that it would help me learn all of the ins and outs of the software and give me some good tips on Live implementation. This is a well written book but it does not go much deeper than the manual that came with my software. By the time the book arrived I had already learned just about every thing in it by reading the manual, watching online videos, doing the tutorials included with Live, and playing around with the software. To be fair I am a professional engineer and have a lot of experience in audio recording, having worked with many different platforms over the years. If you are just getting started with Live and digital recording this may be a good book to read. However, for anyone related experience it may not be worth it.

Intro is limiting and can be annoying (only 8 tracks can be in a song, 12 effects, etc.) but for the price its a good deal. If you want to learn what Ableton Live has to offer its a good buy but if you have the money I vote for buying the more complete software.

If you are just getting started, this is a great product. You are a little limited in the number of clips you can produce in live view and the number of instruments and effects you can use in one track. But for beginners this is enough to get creative. Ableton is very easy to use and there are a ton of blogs and tutorials online.Like it says, it is an intro to music creation at a great price. The idea is that you don't have to spend $400+ on a product that you may discard if music production isn't for you. Ableton live intro is loaded with with almost all the features of ableton live 8, you can make some great proffesional sounding tracks. As you learn more and advance you will definately notice the limitations of intro and want to upgrade to Ableton Live 8. Amazing and I've only scratched the surface.
I bought Suite 8 to use mainly as a production tool but due to a power surge, my DJ mixer got fried. I had just bought a house and Live 8 was already a big purchase so I was going to be in trouble when it came time to make mixes for my college radio show. Turns out Live is a tool that I have always wanted. I started playing wth Tension etc. and found every one of them to be more than impressive for sound design but what really blew me away is how Live makes it possible to make blends that are technically impossible. If I have an idea, 99% of the time I can make it happen. As a college radio DJ, I have complete freedom to play whatever I want so anything goes. I actually mixed En Vogue's "Never Gonna Get It" with Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walking" seamlessly which would be impossible with just the standard DJ setup. The best part is, when I do replace my mixer I can split up the tracks and actually cut them up myself with Serato. With "The Bridge" on the horizon, Live...

Really Excellent!!
I can't add much to what has already been said about Ableton Live except to say it really is everything everybody says it is. All you have to do to find out is down load a FREE FULLY FUNCTIONAL copy from their website (they'll give you a free 30 license) and try it for yourself. Including technical support. I ended up buying the whole suite and I'm really glad I did. So much stuff comes with the Suite version that I think I could play with it for the rest of my life without running out of things to try and experiment with. I use both the "composing/production" side (Session View) and the "recording" side (Arrangement View) which are seamlessly integrated. I suppose a hardcore Pro Tools person could list some obscure feature Pro Tools has that Live doesn't (and probably visa versa) but I am not aware of any feature you have a right to expect from a fully professional recording DAW that Live doesn't have. Ive, had it all, From pro tools to cubase, logic ect, and ableton takes the cake. Its easy to learn, has great workflow and amazing tones. This is the best ableton reference book I have ever read. I dont know the author, I dont know the publisher. And seriously, this is absolutely the first book you should read on ableton live 8.I have been using ableton live since version 5. Some good info but annoying writing style
This book is difficult to read. The author tends to ramble a lot and to spend more time explaining how great Live is (often in very vague language) without actually explaining how to use it. A few paragraphs in the introduction to get people excited about it would have been fine, but a good portion of every single chapter it seems wastes time rambling on about how amazing Live is. Since I've obviously taken the time to read a book on it, do I really need to be told that, over and over and over? Can't I just try it out and make a decision on my own?The author obviously understands Live well and is a devoted and enthusiastic user, but this book badly needs an editor to cut away the fluff and keep him focused on explaining how to make music, rather than how Live is so much better than other production software and is going to "synergize your paradigms in a revolution" or some such.
