50 Flicks of Public Domain Goodness
SciFi Classics is a collection of 50 movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in SciFi Classics:Good:The Amazing Transparent ManAssignment: Outer SpaceHercules and the Tyrants of BabylonHercules UnchainedKillers From SpaceLaser MissionLost JunglePhantom From SpaceThe Phantom PlanetPlanet OutlawsQueen of the AmazonsThe Wasp WomanZontar, the Thing From VenusAverage:Colossus and the Amazon QueenFirst Spaceship On VenusHorrors of Spider Island...

15 bucks well spent
Granted, what this compilation defines as "classic" is rather off-the-mark (unless you consider Ed Wood films as "classic" as well), for the money, this is a great collection of B-to-Z films. Being on the far side of 40, I remember many of these films from my Golden Age of broadcast television, especially the UHF weekend midnight movie showings that usually featured a really bad vampire as the host. And, yes, many of the films are NOT sci-fi in the strictest sense, yet many ARE straight-up low budget sci-fi films. As mentioned in other reviews, many (if not most) are instant MST3K fodder. One thing I do want to specifically mention is that the collection, at least included in the 50-pack I got, DOES include the Ed Woodian classically bad "Robot Monsters." Mine has it titled as "The Robot Monster" on Disc 1, Side A, film 3. I was actually quite happy to finally be able to view this Z classic of the Earth-invading alien portrayed as a helmut-topped gorilla climbing up & down...

The Golden Age of Insight
Nathan Shumate's new book does a number of things, and it does them all well.First of all, it resurrects several long-forgotten b-movie titles for discussion. Some of these, quite honestly, would not have been mourned by history had they been left in obscurity, but Mr. Shumate doesn't just review them. He uses them to illustrate many facets of film-making and story-telling, especially when the budget is lower than low. And since you're not likely to see these any time soon, why not use them to reflect on low-budget film-making in general? This makes this a first-rate guide to making low-budget movies because, while Mr. Shumate does mention technical areas now and then, his real focus is the one thing (to my mind) that must be rock-solid before a frame of film is shot: the script. His insights into the stories of these films are a gold mine of excellent advice for screenwriters. I can imagine the responses of the film-makers: one group smacks their foreheads: "Why...

Pretty Funny Stuff
Read about ten entries. Laughed aloud several times, waking the wife. Nicely done.I remember most of these movies, though I seem to have blocked them out. This book worked like regression therapy, bringing the crap back so I could finally deal with it after all these years. I may still require medication in the form of hard liquor. If you like to laugh, like bad movies, like VHS, or like to laugh at bad VHS movies, pull the trigger and buy this. It's good stuff.

Product Description

Just because you can't respect a movie doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. The Golden Age of Crap serves up a sampling of junk-food flicks that gained their audiences on videocassette rental shelves during the '80s and '90s, a time when one couldn't visit the video rental store without being tempted by Italian post-apocalyptic adventures, ninja revenge yarns, and zombie-filled "camcorder epics." The movies covered here run from sleeper hits (Phantasm II) to cult favorites (The Dead Next Door), from unknown stinkers (Plutonium Baby) to undiscovered gems (America's Deadliest Home Video), all examined with a critical but fun-loving eye.

"Nathan Shumate is a B-movie encyclopedia. I stand in awe of anyone who has seen this many films with the words 'Blood Bath,' 'Zombie,' or 'Bikini' in the title." - LARRY CORREIA, author of Monster Hunter International

"This book skips the usual cult classics and highlights some real gems lost in the wreckage of '80s B-movie video stores with funny and insightful reviews. A must read for B-movie fans!"-BILL GALVAN, comic book artist for Archie Comics and Marvel Comics

"Remember that dude's head exploding in Scanners? Well, that's what would happen to you if you watched more than seven of the bad B movies in Nathan Shumate's The Golden Age of Crap. But Nathan has saved you some messy head explosions by watching the films for you, and his reviews are funnier and more entertaining than all 77 of the films combined." - WILLIAM C. MARTELL, screenwriter of Hard Evidence and Crash Dive Top to learn more

"Take that, you dinosaur!"
The Golden Age of Crap is a well written, exhaustively researched gold mine of information for anyone who has ever hosted a "Bad Movie Night" or enjoys self-abuse in video form. Nathan Shumate is a clever and insightful reviewer and his entries are fun to read. I read this book like any other, simply working through from beginning to end and laughing a lot along the way.I quickly realized that I'd only actually seen two of the 77 movies reviewed here, despite being a child of the 80's. I'm looking forward to finding more of these selections, although the author does warn that a few of them are hard to come by these days.Aspiring filmmakers might well find good advice here, since there are right ways and wrong ways to make a cheap movie. Among with the humorous play-by-play of all the gory details, Shumate details elements of plot, editing, and production that demonstrate good knowledge of what works and what doesn't.If you've ever trolled the...

Another Winner!...
50 DRIVE-IN MOVIE CLASSICS is yet another public domain movie bonanza! It's a mixed bag of hits, misses, and total duds! Still, most are a blast to watch, and cost so much less than other releases of the same movies that it's worth the cheap price! This collection contains nudity, gore, sick humor, etc., and well deserves it's R-rating! Now, to the movies! I'll review 'em in the order they appear and use "*" for stars. THE DEVIL W/ SEVEN FACES- *** Carrol Baker is a woman plagued by the thieving partners of her twin sister. A nice twist ending you'll see coming for miles! TWISTER'S REVENGE- ** (This is on my copy instead of FIEND) A monster-truck w/ artificial intelligence helps it's driver defeat the crooks who want to steal it. Pretty dumb, but fun enough. DAY OF THE PANTHER- *** Aussie kung-fu! Ed Stazak is the fu master, out to get a druglord. Features a kung-fu fighting guy in a pig mask w/ a machette! How can you lose?? CREEPER (AKA: RITUALS)- **** Hal Holbrook stars as a doctor...

On a bit of a different note..
Not really going to talk about how "cheesy" some of these films are - "Drive-In Movie Classics" pretty much sums it up and that is what you get. What I want to do is make a couple of comments about this package of movies that I think many of the other reviewers overlooked:1 - The packaging of the discs - the package I got consisted of a box with 12 individual cardboard sleeves, each with a single DVD inside. Personally I like this as it seems to have kept the discs secure during shipment. I've bought other multi-disc sets and have never been that impressed with how they were shoe-horned into a single huge clam-shell case. Another thing that I like about the slim sleeves that these discs come in - it makes it really easy to drop one or two of these movies into the pockets of my laptop and/or my portable DVD player case. Also on the sleeves is a short description of each movie - in a very readable 12-pt font.2 - The number of discs, there are twelve...

OFFICIAL REVIEW - Horrornews.net
SYNOPSIS:Just because you can make a movie, doesn't mean you should...Written & Directed by: John Wesley NortonStarring: Byron Thames, Larry Thomas, James Vallo, Lindsay GarethREVIEW:Stop me if you've heard this one - a writer, a director, and a producer walk into a bar. They have coffee and drinks during which time they haggle over script changes and the film is interspersed with a movie within a movie detailing the plot and showing us different takes of each person's ideas of how certain scenes of the flick they're haggling over should go while an aspiring waitress waits on their table and tries to get her foot in the door with them to catch her big break by any, and I mean ANY, means necessary. Wait, was I supposed to have a punch line? Sorry, not this time. Fortunately though, this movie has one, as well as an actual message. Wait...what???RAMBLINGS:I knew eventually that if I wished hard enough and...

What A BARGAIN! 50 Classics & Schlock For A Pittance!!!
I purchased this 50 DVD box set this past autumn (for Halloween) and have viewed all of the films. There are some GREAT CLASSICS mixed with fabulous SCHLOCK for a price that can't be beat!Different horror genres including:Crusty, Creepy CreaturesDescend to the depths of the deep, dark ocean and encounter the "Phantom From 10,000 Leagues" and "Creature From The Haunted Sea". Check out the cheesy and quite primitive special effects in "The Giant Gila Monster". Rediscover terror of dogs dressed up in fur playing "The Killer Shrews". Hold your breath to see which hick from the backwoods will actually survive "The Attack of the Giant Leeches"! Also the great "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" with the fabulous Lon Chaney, Jr., "The Gorilla", "Swamp Women", "Atom Age Vampire", "Beast Of yucca Flats", "Black Dragons", "Invisible Ghost", "The Vampire Bat" with Fay Wray, "White Zombie" with Bela Lugosi and "The Bat" With Vincent Price!Majorly Maddening MadmenDescend into...

Exactly what I expected
To be concise and summarize - Great value! 50 movies (I paid about 25 bucks; so 50 cent movies - how can you complain?)Transfer quality generally awful, most but not all are slightly out of focus (won't notice on little tv!) but watchable. If you are a perfectionist you will not want this. Some scenes from some movies have been cut but nothing major so far (have seen maybe 26-27 so far). Sound generally poor, mono, (2 were in stereo). The B&W movies generally not so bad but many of the color films have serious quality problems IMHO. All are full screen; no wide-screen (that I have seen). This is OK since all movies before 1954 were approx. FF anyway. The ideal customer wants a sample of the 20's-60's Horror/Mystery/Action B movies with 3-4 real classics and 15+ total duds. Still, fantastic value. Absolutely no frills. All movies have small number of selectable scenes, no trailers or ANY other stuff. Packaging is 12 d/s single layer disks each in cardboard...

There are some very cool titles in this set like "The Pom Pom Girls", and even the picture quality and sound are good.

The special effects are rather cheesy, though judiciously used, and the monster himself probably ranks as one of the worst among the more important early genre films, giving us one of the least memorable of the rubber-costume, Halloween-mask... Why It Stands Out: This one is a better than average B-Movie and provides us the basic template for movies like Alien is a good, if not spectacular, piece of science fiction film-making. As with many genre films from that time, especially those featuring a monster of some sort, it is a B-Movie through and through. And as B-Movies go, I would rank this rather highly compared to its ilk, maybe 4 or 4 ½ out of 5 stars.

I like non-mainstream movies that I've never heard of. Example: I've already seen True Grit and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. They are for the movie afficionado that doesn't want mainstream stuff bet prefers the lesser known, and sometimes better done selections.
