Product Description

The Willett family's long distilling history began in France in brandy production. They brought their expertise to the American Colonies in the early 1600s, eventually settling in Bardstown, Kentucky. Here, they were involved in the founding of several renowned bourbon distilleries. Willett Single Barrel Estate Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is handmade from carefully selected grains, proprietary yeast, and distinctive limestone spring water. After distillation, the spirit is aged in white oak casks until it reaches peak maturity. This is based on expert barrel sampling, not an arbitrary age. This is an excellent sipping whiskey with layer upon layer of aroma and flavor. Subtle yet assertive, it displays notes of vanilla, caramel, toasted coconut, brown sugar, honey, tangerine, baking spices, cedar, and a hint of fresh herbs. Hilarious, History and great humor...Plus I learned a lot...
Bernie is too funny. I have seen him at industry events numerous times and I always learn something new. This book puts it all in place while at the same time it is full of great humor. I was reading it on my flight the other day and actually laughed out loud so many times that the person next to me had to ask me "What are you reading..."Bernie has put together the most informative book on bourbon and did it in a way that made you not want to put the book down. It is a great reference tool as well. The charts of history are great and the label reading tool will help me make better choices at my local liquor store. The best part was the fact that he included his famous "Urban Bourbon Trail" with all the great local hangouts in Louisville.Just a great book I will read many times.... I will be the most informed bourbon drinker at my next cocktail party.Cheers!

Outstanding!
Bernie has penned the most entertaining and informative book in the industry. If you like bourbon it's a must read. If you have yet to experience the wonderful world of bourbon you will enjoy Bernie's entertaining style and storytelling. Mix a little US history, with equal parts comedy and equal parts information and you have the perfect cocktail of a book. The only improvement would be is that it should come with a glass of Knob Creek...

Product Description

Deep amber color. Spicy charred oak, sweet toffee, and pepper aromas. A rich entry leads to a dryish medium-to full-bodied palate with toffee, mocha, and white pepper flavors with a pronounced copper tang. Finishes with a sweet, charred barrel, brown, and metallic fade. An aggressive and spicy bourbon that will work nicely in a bourbon peach tea cocktail. Lithe and balanced, Woodford is a polished sophisticated bourbon.
Woodford Reserve has a cult following and it's easy to understand why: it has a lean, semi-dry, aspect that emphasizes herbal and botanical notes and downplays the resiny fruity "candy corn"'aspect one often finds in bourbons. It is sophisticated and grown up hooch for more discriminating palates.Woodford is a lovely medium amber color - darker than Makers or Beam but lighter than lighter than, say Kentucky Spirit or Craig 18. It's lovely. Nose is full of toffee walnut and tobacco. There's some leather and cream too. First sip opens bright with honeyed corn. Vanilla notes from oak arrive shortly and the midpalate blooms with herbal and floral aspects that mute the sweetness combined with the leather and tobacco meets toffee aspect. Finish is medium long and a bit dry with oak vanilla floral qualities and a kiss of distant smoke. It's a very tasty experience - if lacking the depth of flavor of the very best. The absence of "corn likker" fruitiness is most...

Going to Church
If you want to see advertising for bourbons, this isn't the book for you. But if you want the story of the bourbon industry, then this is like going to church. You'll get the plain and simple message from the author. This book is now part of my liquor library as the new starting point for my knowledge of bourbon. Enjoyed it, five stars.

Aged in the wood.
It isn't hard to tell when a book is written from piles of research material strung together in a daunting mass. It is equally evident when an entire field of study, wed in the wood, is melded through a lifetime of experience, aged into a narrative that flows so naturally, it issues from the very core of the author. The latter is the case here. From a complex history of chemistry and business decisions is distilled a work that is both complete and readable. Mr. Cowdrey is on his turf here, and it shows. Observations in "Bourbon, Straight" are certain, forceful and backed up not just by facts - but by thoughtful deduction only years can (but do not always) provide. That said, the book is no polemic. The wit and dryly humorous wisdom are winning. When describing one particular whisky, Cowdrey murmers "They possess that ineffable (and much overrated) quality known as smoothness." Highly recommended.

Just adding my voice to the chorus of praise...
for Mr. Cowdery's bourbon book. A very accessible introduction to the topic but filled with information that will educate the aficionado as well. Extremely well-written and researched. Simply a pleasure to read. I only hope that a sequel is forthcoming that will collect more of his outstanding reviews of bourbons currently on the market. You just can't do any better if you want to learn about America's native spirit.

This reopening is a re-focus on Bowman as a microdistillery: not a small producer of mainstream bourbon, but as a place that will do small batches and bottlings of interesting American whiskeys (and other spirits. They are very small runs, though: part of the tour we got was the warehouse (pictured here), and that’s it, that’s the entire stock of A. Smith Bowman whiskey — about 5,000 palletized barrels, ranging from three days to 18 years old. One of those was sitting right up front in the warehouse, a set of wine-type barrels with whiskey in them. One other experiment was the debut whiskey Truman will be bringing to WhiskyFest New York. All were toasted oak, to see what effect that had on the whiskey. As Truman said, Jim Beam makes more whiskey in a week than is in his entire stock.

You’ll drive right through Bardstown when you go to visit Heaven Hill, Thomas Moore, Independent Stave Cooperage, or Maker’s Mark, so you might as well stop off and get some great bourbons you can only find here in the Bourbon Capital of the World. ) and it’s a small ‘lil store in downtown Bardstown that is just chocked FULL of bourbon…as well it should being in the bourbon capital of the world. He’s got a great bourbon spread, and you’ll find some great bourbons you can only get here in Kentucky. These next stores are larger stores with bigger bourbon spreads. Morris’ Deli there has some of the best country ham sandwiches, so make a lunch date of it. It’s a small store too, but have a decent bourbon selection, and it’s close to downtown hotels. Gordo owns the place, and he’s known for his wine selection, but he carries a nice bourbon selection there too. You’ll just get a kick out of just how BIG the bourbon spreads are in the stores. Where do you go. Also, you’re in Kentucky, so certainly there’s some bourbons you can only get here, and not where you’re from. When You Visit The Bourbon Trail…and you will visit. Baker runs this store and he’s a bourbon nut. So you’re in Kentucky visiting distilleries, and you’d like to go purchase some bourbon to take back with you. And don’t forget to visit Bardstown during Bourbon Festival which is always the third weekend in September. 4446 – Jerry Rogers owns the place, and he’s a wine guy from way back, but loves his bourbon. You’ll be in bourbon heaven.
