The PR campaign against this book has already begun
For what it's worth, potential readers of Nestle's book should note that the first three "reader reviews" of this book are pretty obviously cranked out by some food industry PR campaign. To begin with, they were all submitted on the same date, February 22 -- "reader reviews" of a book that isn't even scheduled to go on sale until March 4! For another thing, they all hit on the same food industry "message points": that critics are "nagging nannies" whipping up "hysteria" on behalf of "greedy trial lawyers," etc. February 22 is also the date that noted industry flack Steven Milloy of the "Junk Science Home Page" (...) wrote a review trashing Nestle's book. Milloy is a former tobacco lobbyist and front man for a group created by Philip Morris, which has been diversifying its tobacco holdings in recent years by buying up companies that make many of the fatty, sugar-laden foods that Nestle is warning about. (...)I haven't even had a chance yet to read Nestle's book myself, but it...

The food industry's assault on your health
Nutrition expert Marion Nestle's "Food Politics" explains how the formula for a healthy diet hasn't changed. She advises that one should eat more plant-based foods (fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and less meat, dairy and sweets. But this message collides with the interests of the food-industrial complex, which makes the bulk of its profits by selling relatively expensive processed foods. The book examines how corporations have successfully fought the health message by using a number of overt and covert tactics to further their objectives at the public's expense. In fact, this business success story has resulted in a generation of Americans who are significantly overweight compared with their predecessors. Nestle shows that public relations and government lobbying result in obfuscation and mixed messages about the relative values of certain foods; this generally confuses Americans and makes it difficult to get the "eat less" message. Interestingly, she reveals that the amount...

Product Description

An accessible and balanced account, Food Politics laid the groundwork for today's food revolution and changed the way we respond to food industry marketing practices. Now, a new introduction and concluding chapter bring us up to date on the key events in that movement. This pathbreaking, prize-winning book helps us understand more clearly than ever before what we eat and why.

In the U.S., we're bombarded with nutritional advice--the work, we assume, of reliable authorities with our best interests at heart. Far from it, says Marion Nestle, whose Food Politics absorbingly details how the food industry--through lobbying, advertising, and the co-opting of experts--influences our dietary choices to our detriment. Central to her argument is the American "paradox of plenty," the recognition that our food abundance (we've enough calories to meet every citizen's needs twice over) leads profit-fixated food producers to do everything possible to broaden their market portion, thus swaying us to eat more when we should do the opposite. The result is compromised health: epidemic obesity to start, and increased vulnerability to heart and lung disease, cancer, and stroke--reversible if the constantly suppressed "eat less, move more" message that most nutritionists shout could be heard.

Nestle, nutrition chair at New York University and editor of the 1988 Surgeon General Report, has served her time in the dietary trenches and is ideally suited to revealing how government nutritional advice is watered down when a message might threaten industry sales. (Her report on byzantine nutritional food-pyramid rewordings to avoid "eat less" recommendations is both predictable and astonishing.) She has other "war stories," too, that involve marketing to children in school (in the form of soft-drink "pouring rights" agreements, hallway advertising, and fast-food coupon giveaways), and diet-supplement dramas in which manufacturers and the government enter regulation frays, with the industry championing "free choice" even as that position counters consumer protection. Is there hope? "If we want to encourage people to eat better diets," says Nestle, "we need to target societal means to counter food industry lobbying and marketing practices as well as the education of individuals." It's a telling conclusion in an engrossing and masterfully panoramic exposé. --Arthur Boehm Top to learn more

Great Cookbook!
I subscribe to Everyday Food and use the recipes constantly. I've never made an Everyday Food recipe that wasn't really good. I went ahead and bought the cookbook because it was a really good price, even though they've all been in the magazine. Some cooks might think that the recipes are fancy or complicated by looking at the titles or photographs, but they're really easy, and use easy-to-find ingredients, even in a small town. I also like the fact that the recipes never call for processed ingredients, like cream of mushroom soup, etc. Also, some of the recipes venture out from typical family fare, and many might say that their families won't eat the food. My philosophy is that if your family is hungry, they will eat what you provide, unless you want to be a short-order cook every night. This book is arranged differently than the first book. Where the first one was arranged by season (which I happen to really like), this one is arranged by meals and courses. Also, in regard to a...

Love This Book
Enjoyed the first book and now I have another 250 recipes to make. All of the dishes turn out just as pretty as the pictures and taste great as well. I bought this book for both of my grown kids, who are beginner cooks and they both love it as well. They both said that having the pictures help them realize what the dish should look like and whether they are interested in making the recipe. Both of the cook books in this series make a wonderful addition to my cookbook collection.

Sample Recipe from Everyday Food: Fresh Flavor Fast

Lamb Chops with Parsley Pesto

Serves 4
Prep time: 15 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes

Pesto made with parsley and sharp Pecorino Romano cheese (and without nuts) makes a colorful topping for tender lamb chops. It could also be tossed with pasta, spread on sandwiches, or mixed with cream cheese for a dip to serve with crudités.

Lamb Chops
8 lamb loin chops (each 4 ounces and 1 inch thick)
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1/2 cup Parsley Pesto (recipe below)

Heat a large skillet over medium. Pat dry lamb with paper towels. Season chops on both sides with salt and pepper. Cook (in two batches, if necessary) 4 to 6 minutes per side for medium-rare. Serve immediately, topped with pesto.

Parsley Pesto
Makes 1/2 cup
2 cups packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves
3/4 cup grated Pecorino Romano cheese (2 ounces)
1 small garlic clove, coarsely chopped
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for storing (optional)
Freshly ground pepper

In a food processor, finely chop parsley, cheese, and garlic. With the motor running, add oil in a slow, steady stream; season with pepper. Serve immediately, or transfer to an airtight container and cover with a thin layer of oil; refrigerate up to 4 days or freeze up to 3 months.

Freezing Pesto
Pesto keeps very well in the freezer, so it’s worth making extra. Freeze it in small airtight containers, covered with a thin layer of olive oil. Defrost in the refrigerator before using.

Great if You Don't Subscribe to the Magazine
The recipes in this cookbook are very good. But because I am a subscriber of the magazine (which is excellent, by the way), this book is nothing more than a compilation of recipes from the magazine. If you don't subscribe, it's a great cookbook. If you do subscribe, all of the recipes will be very familiar, and you will spend double the money on the same thing.

A true Heymisha Cookbook :-)
This cookbook is filled with stories, traditional recipes and a lot of love from Bubbe! I fully enjoyed reading her personal stories, pictures and of course, the Yiddish word of the day at the bottom of every page. Some of the recipes are handed down from her mother which is really special. She definitely makes it easy for you to recreate her recipes and she fills the pages with encouraging words for those of us who are timid in the kitchen. This really is a wonderful book to add to any collection and I can't wait to start cooking!

Like a letter from home...
Reading 'Feed Me Bubbe' was like getting a long-awaited letter from home filled with stories about heritage and packed with all the bits of wisdom my own grandmother and mother aren't around to give me anymore. Nervous about cooking for a new husband? Can't remember whether it's 1/2 teaspoon or just one? Relax. Take a deep breath. Ask Bubbe. These recipes aren't complicated and they're delicious. I've tried her Roast Chicken - it's outstanding. I've made her brisket - and even though I didn't like brisket because it always seemed to be tough, tasteless, and stringy, hers is tender and full of flavor. There are some recipes in this book that are sure-fire go-to instructions for feeding a couple or a crowd. And as another reviewer said, the stories will bring tears to your eyes. They will also make you smile.Get a copy. You won't regret it... and get another for someone you love: whether it's for your daughter or your granddaughter or your best friend or your...

Remember when food was local?

. . . when Cleveland companies made it, and local people sold it and ran the restaurants where we ate it?

Food makes powerful memories. Just mention Hough Bakeries and see how quickly we Clevelanders start to drool over just the thought of those long-lost white cakes. This book collects the fondest memories of fellow Clevelanders who all share an ache for treats from the past. There were Frostees in Higbees’ basement. Popcorn balls at Euclid Beach. Burgers at Manners or Mawby’s or Kenny King’s. Entertainment-filled nights at Alpine Village. Mustard at old Municipal Stadium . . . and so much more. Look inside and rediscover some of your own favorite local flavors! Top to learn more

Eat this book - YUM!
I enjoyed this book for exactly what it was - a walk through the Cleveland Food, Beverage and Snack businesses from the early 1900's to the eighties. As any Clevelander knows, Clark's, Mawby's and Hough Bakeries were right up there with Heaven on Earth! It was a pleasure to read snips and short histories on the many establishments that I grew up with. The book had wonderful photos and the samplings of memories about each of the places were fun to read. NO - this isn't John Grisham or Stephen King as far as literary genius - but who cares? It is a terrific collection of CLEVELAND FOOD MEMORIES! Buy the book!!

Tasty stroll down memory lane....
Gave this book to my parents...a native West Sider, and Geauga county country girl. My dad spent the rest of the day savoring all the antecdotes and photos, thorougly enjoying the dining of his past. The book is mostly a compilation of personal memories, not as much of a factual historical listing of Cleveland food establishments....but aren't memories personal anyway? Food is universal, and even though my mom was a country girl who didn't go into the city often....they had common dining memories. A great gift for the pre-boom and boomer age. (I'm a older Gen Xer...and hardly knew any of the places listed) I put this book in a gift basket of several of the food products from the book that are still available...Humphrey Kisses, Bertman's Mustard, it was a big hit.

Finally, yummy vegan recipes (even for non-vegans)!
This book was recommended to me by a vegan chef whom I hired to teach me how to cook some healthier meals. The Tempeh pate recipe (serve it w/plain, unsalted rice crackers, mmmm . . . ) is worth the price of the book alone. I have tried the tempeh provencal recipe, and I didn't find that to my liking, but I think some of my ingredients weren't of the highest quality and may have been old . . . I have eaten at the Native Foods Restaurant a couple of times and the food is excellent - if you get a chance eat at one of her locations (I frequent the Westwood one). She has a website: http://www.nativefoods.com/I have eaten a lentil soup, a cauliflower "Cream" soup, a baja surf ("fish") taco and the Bali Surf Burger at the restaurant. Unfortunately, only the Surf Burger is included in the recipe book - but all were FABULOUS. I am no culinary expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I am picky and these recipes are easy to follow - and that Tempeh Pate, you...

The smallest details can ruin a great recipe!
I would love to give this book five stars. When I first bought it, I certainly would have. However, as I worked my way through the book and cooked with more of the recipes, I found myself with headaches as often as I had great food. Here's why: This book is not edited well, and it is not written with a beginning or even an intermediate cook in mind. That combination spells disaster. In roughly a third of the recipes in the book, vital details are missing, details that might seem minor to a casual reader or obvious to advanced cooks but mean the difference between beautiful food and a disgusting, and in some cases expensive, catastrophe. Here's a good example. Many of the book's recipes call for a meat substitute called seitan, a sort of gluten loaf cooked in broth. A recipe for seitan is provided in the early chapters of the book. Interested in making at home what can be a very expensive item in the store, I set out to make seitan one day according to the...

Because finding these ingredients can be hard at the conventional grocery store, online food sites are packaging ethnic ingredients together. The trend of online shopping is still growing, but there are a few sectors that... Reviews and testimonials online make shoppers eager to click and buy when they’re comfortable with the purchase. The one thing to be weary of when purchasing designer watches and purses online is to make sure you’re buying from a reputable source. Depending on what the item is, you can often save anywhere from 10-30% off the item by purchasing online. We suggest buying electronic goods online when you know what you want and have done your research on the product. Over a decade ago, business magazines and economists said there’s no way people would buy such pricey items without seeing said items first. Online shopping allows someone to buy what’s within their means, but may not be accessible for them. Buying everything from a car to jewelry in the five figures is now the norm for online shoppers. Know that many small online stores do not offer returns or exchanges, so this is also something to keep in mind when forking over dough for a ritzy piece. As opposed to waltzing into a store and becoming overwhelmed with the options or feeling a sales person is trying to up sell tons of gadgets to go along with your purchase, you’re able to click and buy from the comfort of your home.

For example, the bulk products from Frontier, available in most natural food stores and health-food departments of grocery stores, are natural and sustainably grown. 1: You must buy in large quantities to buy bulk. Ellen Bouchard, bulk manager at Frontier Natural Products Co-op, describes and dispels the following common bulk-food myths and provides shopping tips for consumers. Glass is safer than plastics for food storage, so you might want to buy some airtight glass jars in various sizes. If you think you might like to try something new, buying in bulk enables you to purchase a small quantity without worrying about wasting money. Keep in mind that prices for bulk products are considerably lower than the packaged versions, and the full amount of your purchase goes toward the product, not packaging or advertising. In fact, bulk offers an easy and economical way to expand your food horizons by letting you try small amounts of unfamiliar products. “Bulk” refers to how the store offers the product, not how much you have to buy. If you’re looking for ways to reduce the packaging your family sends to landfills, a great place to start is your grocery’s bulk food aisle.

I wandered down my old block last week, shaking hands with neighbors I hadn't seen in years, dodging the tricycles owned by the children of the people whose tricycles I had dodged 20 years ago. There was a single Salvadoran restaurant open in the burned-out mall, a well-lighted redoubt of caldo de pollo surrounded by ruined stores, but I didn't find a place to buy milk until the supermarkets opened the next day. The difference between high cuisine and street cuisine, between "ethnic" cooking and American food, began to fade. The neighborhood — the diversity of the neighborhood — may have been what drove me to write about food in the first place. Around the corner on Vermont Avenue is a now-famous ruin, a block-long strip mall whose smoking, melted contours have been broadcast around the world in the last 24 hours. I gingerly wander through the neighborhood, hoping to find a place to buy a quart of milk. Cheap beats by dre headphones online. I wandered over to Vermont in time to see two young men put down their booty just long enough to help an elderly woman wrestle a tufted chair across the street.
