From the creative minds behind Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy X comes the latest installment in the critically acclaimed series. As Final Fantasy VII was for PlayStationr, and Final Fantasy X for PlayStationr2 computer entertainment system, Final Fantaxy XIII will be the first numbered Final Fantasy title for the PlayStationr3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360r, and will look to once again reestablish the series as the RPG brand. Players will follow Lightning, Snow, and the other heroes who are dealt a hand of fate by the god-like fal'Cie. Cursed and regarded as enemies of society, they have the world against them and nobody to rely on but each other. Will they find the strength within themselves to break free of their curse and determine their own fates, or will they succumb to this higher power? With a story that is sure to connect with players' hearts, diverse new characters from world-renowned creator and character designer Tetsuya Nomura, and exciting new game play features centered around an evolved Active Time Battle system, Final Fantasy XIII will be the pinnacle in gaming experiences. Prepare for Linearity (at first)
I have completed the main story arc, and am now working on Marks. Here's my (4.5-Star) review:-As many preliminary reviewers have stated, this iteration of the Final Fantasy series is quite noticeably linear in nature in its first half. Compared to the previous FF installments, which allow you to explore a vast open world from the outset and take on various optional side-quests, FFXIII gives you neither for the first 18-20 hours of the game. Things open up after that point, but your options are still very limited compared to earlier FF games. There is also little opportunity to "level grind" (although the term doesn't explicitly apply here, more on that later) until you reach this point. You are given a proverbial "ceiling", a temporary limit to which your party members can be strengthened and developed, and for better or worse, you have to make the most of what's available to you to overcome the next challenging boss battle. Also, NPC interaction is highly limited,...

  • The player will be presented with a series of "dialogue trees" when talking to non-player characters (NPCs).
  • Just as the monsters appear on screen, a dial clock called "Mog Clock" appears in the middle of the bottom half of the screen and a red ring surrounds the player's character with a radius of about 3 meters.
  • Players will be presented with a puzzle-like problem in a void between dimensions.
  • The Crux system allows players to jump through various gates throughout XIII-2. Players will see a drastic change, based on their choices. This would also go towards the multiple endings of the game.

Jammed packed with fun!
The best part about this game in my opinion is the overall vas exploration and hidden secrets all over. I have always been the type to work hard to find all a game has to offer and FFXIII-2 has tons. Monster collection, which I originally thought was a terrible addition to fill in the spot of a third character, is so much fun and very addicting. Almost every monster you fight, you have a chance of collecting them in a crystal, having them join your party. Each one has a specific role and their own unique feral attacks. Overall, it's a fantastic addition to the game. When you feel like taking a break from searching for Lightning, there is an amusement park style casino where you can play slots and raise chocobo's for the races to earn some nice prizes and gil. There are a few areas here that are not open yet. If you talk to an employee NPC, you will hear that these areas are under construction and will be available at a later date. Hinting that new games will be...

It's not over yet...
First of all let me say that you are in for disappointment if you think this is the last FF13 game. The ending clearly states "to be continued" so you can expect there will be a Ff13-3.In any case, FF13-2 is truly a fun game with a unique battle system where you can use monsters to fight for you like pokemon. If you didn't preorder the game, you won't be able to use Omega Weapon in battle until they release a DLC for it. Don't worry though, I got Omega and he sucks so you aren't missing anything. In addition to the main story, there are many side quests and random things to do such as gambling at a casino and chocobo racing. Even with all these extra things to do, the duration of the game is relatively short. I finished the game in 30 hours even after spending a lot of time doing quests and leveling up. For unlocking the platinum trophy for ps3, it took me an extra 40 hours. As for the story itself, be prepared to be confused. You've probably seen the...

Mankind was blessed by its protectors, the benevolent fal'Cie, and believed that tranquil days would continue forever. Their tranquillity was shattered with the discovery of one hostile fal'Cie. The moment that fal'Cie from Pulse - the feared and detested lowerworld - awoke from its slumber, peace on Cocoon came to an end. Fal'Cie curse humans, turning them into magic-wielding servants. They become l'Cie - chosen of the fal'Cie. Those branded with the mark of a l'Cie carry the burden of either fulfilling their Focus or facing a fate harsher than death itself. A prayer for redemption. A wish to protect the world. A promise to challenge destiny. After thirteen days of fates intertwined, the battle begins. Set several years after Lightning and the others saved Cocoon, some survivors have decided to start over by rebuilding on Gran Pulse. Lightning, however, is nowhere to be found and thought dead by many, but Serah believes otherwise. When her town is suddenly overrun by monsters, a mysterious man named Noel appears to save her. An improvement to all of FFXIII's weak points but ending feels unsatisfying
I've been waiting for FFXIII-2 for a while and I have to say this game is an improvement to all of the weak aspects of Final Fantasy XIII. I have played this game nonstop since it came out and I was able to rush through the main storyline in 20 hours. Keep in mind that I have beaten this game (got through the final cutscene)but not with 100% completion. The first DEFINITE improvement is that you are no longer bound by a linear storyline / corridors to travel through. This is a much welomed improvement for sure, the option for the player to proceed at their own pace by selecting to skip around history is very nice. The second improvement is that the upgrading system seems to be easier to use, you are able to level your character as you please and you are able to level whatever role you want. Now to the bad parts (not a lot and these are just opinions)The first is that your third party member is limited to the monsters you encounter and...

First Impressions-- an Interjection
I'm only a few hours in to the game, but my experience is already so sharply different from what I've read online that I'm going to add my two cents a little early. I will address the two big controversies that are fueling a lot of misinformation: the Xbox 360 version's graphics and the linearity of the gameplay, both of which have been grossly exaggerated.Playstation 3 owners are very disappointed that Square-Enix has given so much support to Microsoft lately, and FFXIII going multiplatform was to many an abomination to God. I get it. Really, I do. This happened about fifteen years ago when Squaresoft shifted support from Nintendo to Sony after giving us Final Fantasy I, II(US), III(US), Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana, all of which I played and loved as they were released. Nintendo was THE Square system back then, just as many feel Playstation is today. But times change. Instead of being grateful that FFXIII is MULTIplatform instead of a Microsoft exclusive,...

~30 HOURS IN . . . I QUIT!
[SPOILER FREE]A veteran of Final Fantasy 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 and Tactics, for the first time, I have finally given up on a Final Fantasy game. Here are the contributing factors:LINEARITY:This word has been used so much in reviews that I feel it needs to be re-defined. Are the maps linear? In a general sense, yes, but there are dead ends, forks and roundabouts en route to your destination. You aren't walking down a hamster tube the whole time as some would have you believe. However! One often FEELS as if they were walking down a hamster tube because this game lacks things that most great RPGs have in common:Decision-making!A good RPG should NOT be a novel. A good RPG should be more like a CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN-ADVENTURE-type book. In an RPG, there is no little to no fun in following a story that is completely predetermined.Variety! In the ~30 hours I've played this game, not once have I seen any side...

Final Fantasy XIII - Doesn't Live Up To Its Legacy
Final Fantasy XIII - Doesn't Live Up To Its LegacyWarning: This will be lengthy, detailed review (Spoiler Free).Who Am I:Avid RPG fan that grew up with the Final Fantasy (FF) series, dating back to FF2 (US). I've completed the game in just under 45+ hrs. I have no interest in doing the side quests - read below for more info on that. The Final Fantasy series has been near and dear to my heart for a long time. Very few RPGs can match the universe that this series has built in each establishment. So with each new Final Fantasy installment, criticism will be at an all-time high because the game has the highest of expectations and standards in regards to a RPG. Each FF game should drive the RPG market and show the shortcomings of the other RPGs. Unfortunately, FF13 has taken a huge step back in regards to the series and its attempt to evolve the RPG universe.Let's get started with the review.Linearity:...

A Step in the right direction... With a step back...
Just a quick review. I have completed the game, and almost all of the side-quests. I also completely finished XIII and quite a few other games in the FF series.Music - Good, not great. Good mix, but a little different. Some of the music seems out of place, but still has some great songs.Graphics - Very good, even though not much better than FF XIII. I still think the animation cut-scenes are amazing. The worlds are detailed and amazing.Story - Complicated... And kind of ridiculous. Honestly, I would settle for a common love story or story of loss... I didn't need the time paradox to come in to play. Let's leave that to Sci-Fi. It may have been well thought out, but just didn't make a lot of sense.Difficulty - This is the biggest part for me. At 35 hours in I had already beaten the toughest enemy in the game, before even beating the weaker final boss? By the time I got to the end I was just pressing A to select commands. I would much...

Much better than I anticipated!
Before I go into my review, I am making it known that I have yet to finish the game. As I continue playing, I will update this review so my opinion will be accurate.Opening the case: The first thing I noticed was that this game was contained on a single disc. This was interesting to me considering that the previous game was on three discs. As other reviews may have mentioned, this was because this game was made with the Xbox working smarter, not harder. I thought however that this might come at a price - shorter sequences or shoddier quality. I'll discuss this more later on.Storyline: Without going into too much detail,I believe the storyline in this game is much better than of XIII. XIII did not have a poor storyline but at times it felt as if I was being bogged down with inane details. In addition, I found myself wondering what was going on when I took extended breaks from the game. XIII-2 remedied this in two ways - a storyline which (for the moment) is...

Great Sequel
FF XIII-2 continues three years after the first game left off. You assume the role of Serah, who now lives on a settlement on Gran Pulse. She's recently been having dreams where her big sister (and FF XIII main heroine) Lightning fights a mysterious foe in a place called Valhalla. She wakes up one night to discover that a meteorite has crashed down nearby, bringing with it a boy, Noel, who claims to be the last survivor of humanity from a far future. Noel has met with Lightning and was sent to Serah, he says, because the two of them must take a time-travelling adventure to unwind a paradox-filled history -- and that's exactly what they do.The time-travel element may remind some players of Square classic Chrono Trigger, and the comparison isn't terribly far off. Serah and Noel hop around different eras and locations in the world's history, solving problems and opening portals to other eras and potential futures. Though parts of the story are still linear, you're given far...

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Time and memory, frozen in crystal.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is the sequel to the controversial 2010 release Final Fantasy XIII. It is loved by many, and hated by others. This is something that it has in common with many of the predecessors that came before it. Square-Enix was determined to try and fix many of the mistakes they felt that they had made.Personally I have enjoyed every Final Fantasy, even Final Fantasy XI, XII, XIII, and XIV (now). I come into each, and every one of them with a different set of eyes. This is not a series that is not going to stay along a specific formula. Each chapter in the Final Fantasy saga is constantly evolving, and changing. It is up to the fans to embrace that change or sadly this Fantasy may be Final for you.Story (Spoiler free):The story in XIII-2 is pretty interesting. It plays off similarly to a mystery. It starts off 3 years after the events of the previous game. Lightning is gone, and Serah is determined to find her along with Noel. They set off...

Worth a second look
I just want to say that I really enjoyed the first one, FFXIII. I had a lot of fun with it and nearly spent 120 hours on it, damn you treasure hunter trophy, but i've also played every other final fantasy except FFX, FFXI, FFXII, and FFXIV. If your going to compare it to the best the final fantasy franchise has to offer, sure it's going to be a little disappointing. Though it still is a really fun JRPG. I feel people just hold it to an extremely high expectation because, will I mean come on FFIX,FFVIII, FFIV, FFV as well as FFVI...which all are really incredible games so it's understandable to a point. In my opinion sqeenix was doing what they always have done, which is to change the formula of their own standard they set on the previous title. They generally outperform, or at the very least are on par, with their previous title. I will have to agree that they fell short on quite a few aspects, definitely not the graphics though, on their FFXIII title.FFXIII-2 is so much...

A vast improvement.
I'm one of those that liked the first one, though I had some problems with its game design. XIII-2 fixes most of those problems. The combat is faster and you're thrown into the story without a 12 hour tutorial. The graphics are gorgeous, the music is gorgeous, and the gameplay is a lot more fun. However, you had to have finished FFXIII to really understand whats going on.If you liked FFXIII you'll love this one.If you hated FFXIII you'll hate this one a bit less than you hated XIII.

Yes, she is right.

I tried to record it about 7 or 8 times, but my lack of speech keeps messing it up. On April 4, 2012, I finally decided to store away my new Xbox slim that i gotten last summer and made a new PSN name of Mistress Farron and started playing and... People say I did a great job doing the play-by-plays and one of my transitional teachers suggested I go pro announcing at baseball games, but I declined because I was too embarrassed to do it. XD I'm a hardcore Final Fantasy fan since January 2001... By June 2001, I finished Final Fantasy 8, recording 7 parts of the game and 2 tapes of the mini-missions (Side Quests of Discs 2 and 3). Ever since I was 5 years old, I always love to tape record myself with tape cassettes and a tape player. I created my tape channel called Channel 14 (Now Channel 14 HD). I was a good sports commentator back in high school when I sportscast my tapes for Adapted Sports (Students who are handicapped) from 2000 to 2004. The past 2 years of my first record run of 13, I made a couple of errors since it was my first time playing the game. I thought of an idea of trying to record myself farming CP using tape cassettes on my Texas Instruments Audio Recorder. On March 10, 2010, I played Final Fantasy 13 on the Xbox 360 console for the first time without recording. Once I finish the game, then I will move onto Final Fantasy 13-2 (Chaotic Existence 2).
