Looks like it is just repackaged from the 4 volumes earlier this year.
I looked at this set in the store today and it really appears as if the contents actually are the 4 Ultimate Collectors Volumes inside this case with Craig's Casino Royale along side. And by the contents being the 4 Volumes, literally, it looks like they are inside this black box.I opted for the Ulimate Collector's Bundle for $179, instead of this, since I purchased Casino Royale when it was released, and I am really just looking for all the previous movies from Connery to Brosnan in the remastered 2-disc versions. Also of note, if you want all the Bond films- you have to order Never Say Never Again as a separate item, that is not part of the MGM/UA library.

I am deducting 1 star because the packaging is not worthy of the ultimate James Bond set. While Europe and parts of Asia get the stunning attache case box set, the US and Canada get only a cardboard box. OK. A shiny cardboard box.Inclusion of Casino Royale, notwitstanding. Are you listening, MGM?

DAMAGED GOODS
Some reviewers and fans of the Bond films have complained that this film is a lesser effort in the series and pales in comparison to "Casino Royale". They have missed something important in their assessment of the film. When Dominic Green says to Bond that he and Camille Montez have something in common, that they are both "Damaged goods" he has clearly put before the audience the crux of the film that is "Quantum of Solace".The film picks up only minutes after the end of "Casino Royale" and we are presented with a very damaged and changed James Bond. As revealed in the first film by Vesper Lynd's assessment of him upon their first meeting on the train, James Bond is a man who came up from humble beginnings and was given a privileged education but never allowed to forget his low origins. This has made him a very guarded loner with a chip on his shoulder, a perfect candidate for recruitment by MI6. In his words to her later on in the film, Vesper has "stripped me of my armor." But...

Quantum of Solace Not Perfect, But Still A Superior Bond Film
"Quantum of Solace," the latest James Bond film and the second featuring Daniel Craig has its flaws, but is still a pretty spectacular film. The series is in full retooling mode, hardly recognizable when compared to the films of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. While closer to the darker sides of Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan's Bonds, it does have more in common with the popular Jason Bourne series starring Matt Damon, which is not a bad thing. This Bond pickes up right after the end of Casino Royale, as Bond takes a prisoner for interrogation to M, again played by Dame Judy Dench. The interrogation and subsequent events uncovers a global conspiracy named Quantum, with members of prominence and power, including an admired environmentalist who is obviously up to no good. The rest of the film plays out as Bond races to find out and foil the villain's scheme, partnered with a revenge-minded woman, played by Olga Kurylenko. The negatives - This film is much shorter...

THEY DON'T LEAVE YOU MUCH CHOICE BUT TO BUY THEM.
Having purchased all Bond DVDs years ago, to my own consternation I find myself shelling out even more money to buy this new editions.I always thought they did a fairly good job with the old DVDs, the "Making of" documentaries were excelent and the overall presentation rather good. Why buy these new ones then ? The answers are rather simple:1) 5.1 DTS sound on all movies. For years I've opted to turn off my sound equipment when watching the Connery films. It just didn't make that much of a difference from listening to them on regular TV's speakers. Some of the later ones (OCTOPUSSY) should also benefit greatly from this addition.2) FRAME BY FRAME RESTORATION: Specially important in the Connery ones even though the earlier Moores left a lot to be desired too. It is my understanding that the three earlier movies which were cropped at the top and bottom in order to fit them into 16:9 sets will be presented in their entirety. And this isn't just any...

A revelation in sight and sound...
Sony pictures has taken over the MGM/UA film library and now offers new editions of the Bond films (the gem of that acquisition) in time for the holidays (early November); and not merely to annoy those who've purchased them previously. These films have been re-mastered (via the truly revolutionary Lowry System) and the results are stupendous, both visually and aurally. I've seen the PAL versions and they are truly, opening-night pristine, and the DTS mixes are astonishing - not just souped up or boosted versions of the original sound mixes, but re-actualized using the original sound stems with discrete directional remixes. It's probably not an option for many to re-purchase all 20 of these ultimate editions, but you'll be doing yourself a fan's disservice if you don't at least replace the Connery originals (mostly monaural) with these new editions. DR. NO, FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and GOLDFINGER are must-haves. My own personal favorite was the new version of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET...

A marked improvement over the Special Editions
The Bond DVD collection was last available individually in 1999/2000, and as a 3-box, 'Special Edition' version a year or two ago. As noted elsewhere, these `Ultimate' Editions are suppose to be an incredible upgrade in sound and picture quality, completed by Lowry Digital, which is the platinum standard in film restoration. For this Bond effort, over 42 miles of film were scanned, and restored frame-by-frame (each frame was stored as a 45 megabyte image). It makes sense to get this set if you are not planning to go to high definition DVD in the next few years. These, I expect, will be as bright and clean as standard DVDs can possibly be, so why not get them now. I'll get them just to see and hear the older films in this as-new condition. For HD fans, it's interesting to note that the Lowry scanning occurred at a resolution of 4,000 x 3,000 pixels, in contrast with the 720 x 576 pixel resolution of standard DVDs. This means that the films were restored to...

Back with a vengeance
I was beginning to wonder if James Bond was dead, but along comes Daniel Craig to breathe new life into the role, giving us a lean, mean 007 that blows previous Bonds away. Martin Campbell went back to the basics, retooling Bond and giving him a much more physical presence, reminiscent of Sean Connery. From the opening sequence we see we are in for a real treat, as Campbell takes nothing for granted. He knows he has to earn the audience's respect, and he does with a thrilling chase scene in the chaotic urban center of an African republic.Bond really comes across as a rogue agent in Casino Royale, stealing his way into M's apartment to leave her coded messages, taking risks that threaten painstaking operations and getting himself into jams that require MI6 to bail him out. This is a young impetuous Bond, overanxious and thrilling to watch as Craig fills his role with the energy of a stage actor. There is also one of the best villains in recent years with Mads...

Bond Reinvigorated With Real Ruthlessness And Genuine Romance--Craig Disproves His Harshest Critics
I like James Bond as much as the next guy. I've read a couple of Ian Fleming's novels, have seen all the films (many in the theater), and have all the box set DVDs. I don't consider myself obsessive, however, Bond to me has always been a bit of a lark--adrenaline style entertainment. From the serious Bond to the cheesy Bond, there's always some action or outrageousness to admire. So I was mystified when so many people were absolutely indignant that Daniel Craig was signed for the role. I'm not saying I supported the ouster of Brosnan, I'm just saying I was pleased that a talented actor was taking his place. And the idea of rebooting the series wasn't controversial to me, but an ingenious way to reinvigorate the franchise. Now having seen "Casino Royale," I stand firm in my opinion that Craig makes an excellent 007 (even though he's blonde and not Clive Owen). He demonstrates a real brashness as the newly promoted Bond--defiant, cocky and tough as nails. But the character...

007 returns to DVD, and in top form.
Volume 3 of the recently released Bond DVD sets is without a doubt the best of the 4. Each film in this set ranks among the better to best Bond pictures ever. No lame duds such as Die Another Die or Moonraker are included, just very solid installments. GoldenEye is the crown jewel of the set for me personally, as it was the first one I saw as a child, thus becoming my favorite. From Russia With Love is my second favorite Bond film, not just in this set, but period. Connery never bettered his preformance in this film and Robert Shaw as Red Grant is simply one of the greatest Bond villians ever. The plots of both these films push them to the head of the pack as they are interesting, exciting, and actually make sense, unlike say The World is not Enough. Live and Let Die marked Roger Moore's debut as Bond and I believe this to be his second best turn in the role. The Spy Who Loved Me (not included in this set, would be his best I believe) However, Live and Let Die as well as For Your Eyes...

Best Bond Set Of The Four
This set is easily the best of the Bond sets to be released. First there's Goldeneye, which is almost univerally accepted as Brosnan's best Bond film. Not only did it revitalize the series and set up Bond for his post-Cold War adventures, but it also proved that the generic Bond formula could be reworked to great effect. Plus, it introduced Dame Judi Dench as M. Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, and From Russia With Love are all fine Bond fare, but the other bookend of this set is another gem. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is well known for many things, but perhaps it is most loved for being George Lazenby's only go at the iconic figure. Some love it simply because they hate Lazenby's portrayal and they are grateful that his first Bond film was also his last. I, along with many other fans, love it because Lazenby is actually a rather good Bond, and the movie itself is quite entertaining regardless of who plays the title character (it's definitely one of the most serious Bond...

Perhaps the Best Volume
I've also reviewed the first two volumes but I honestly believe that Volume Three is the best. I plan on getting them all and have the entire series for the first time in my life but, if I had to pick a single best volume, it would be this one.FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE has the most solid Cold War story of all the films and everyone is firing on all pistons. Connery IS Bond in this one, making the character his own, and Robert Shaw and Lotte Lenya as the villians are among the best.ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE is George Lazenby's only film and it remains a controversial entry in the series. Myself, I loved it. Diana Rigg is awesome, the photography and editing are great, and the story feels like it has more meat on its bones than any other film.(These first two films probably come closest to the Ian Fleming novels).LIVE AND LET DIE is Moore's first appearance as Bond. It has a hit Paul McCartney & Wings song and a 19-year-old Jane...

Goldeneye: The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. There's also a seductive villainous with the suggestive name of Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), and the great actress Judi Dench makes her first appearance as Bond's superior, M, who wisecracks about 007's "dinosaur" status as a globetrotting sexist. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. --Jeff Shannon

Live and Let Die: Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. More self-consciously suave and formal than predecessor Sean Connery, he immediately reestablished Bond as an uncomplicated and wooden fellow for the feel-good '70s. This film also marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

For Your Eyes Only: After a ship sunk off the coast of Albania, the world's superpowers begin a feverish search for its valuable lost cargo: the powerful ATAC system, which will give its bearer unlimited control over Polaris nuclear submarines. As Bond joins the search, he suspects the suave Kristatos (Julian Glover) of seizing the device. The competition between nations grows more deadly by the moment, but Bond finds an ally in the beautiful Melina Havelock (Caroline Bouquet), who blames Kristatos for the death of her parents. The non-stop action includes automobile chases, thrilling underwater battles, and even a breathtaking tour over razor-sharp coral reefs. But all of this is merely a prelude to 007's cliffhanging assault of a magnificent mountaintop fortress. -- Robert Lynch

From Russia with Love: Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. From Russia with Love is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming. --Jeff Shannon

On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond (although Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore); Lazenby's subsequent career fizzled, yet this one-hit wonder is responsible for one of the best Bond films of all time. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan involves a threat to the world's crops by agricultural sterilization. Bond teams up with suave international crime lord Draco (Gabriele Ferzetti) and falls in love with--and marries--his elegant daughter, Tracy (Diana Rigg). Bond goes monogamous? Not at first; after all he has Blofeld's harem to seduce. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence, and Rigg, fresh from playing sexy Emma Peel in The Avengers, matches 007 in every way. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences with a kinetic finesse. Though not a hit on its original release, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has become a fan favorite and the closest the series has come to capturing the spirit of Ian Fleming's books. --Sean Axmaker
