Almost limitless
Ok, so this thing is kind of a toy, but my oh my, what a toy it is. I'm absolutely in love with. I'm kind of an acoustic musician. I play acoustic guitar (don't even own an electric) and upright bass, and any other box of sound I can get my hands on. Most synths and whatnot never seemed worth my money. I saw this little guy when I went searching for something I could use with special-needs students. I wanted something you could produce sound on without needing to know anything about playing an instrument. The price was right, so I got it, and the kids have loved it. I first thought it was a nice toy for the classroom, but then I started practicing on it myself, and I just couldn't believe how involved you can get with it. Once you unlock the little loop extender (from 8 beats to 16- you can find the trick on Korg's website) you can really get inventive. KAOSS fans will Love the KAOSSILATOR
The Korg Kaossilator is billed as a `Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer' and if you want phrases to loop and make your own creations, this is the machine. Dynamic = The X-Y touchpad surface allows for limitless real time manipulations of patches. Phrase = This is a phrase machine. Each preset is a sound/phrase. Other Kaoss Pads had some synth and drum sounds, but were also effects processors; the Kaossilator is all about sounds and loops and making its own noises, rather then manipulation of others; hence no inputs on the Kaossilator. The Kaossilator looks similar to the other member of the Kaoss Pad family, this time in yellow. About 4 by 5 by 1 inches; 4 `AA' batteries power it and free it from AC supplies. Great meditation device, too
Took me all of about 30 minutes to master the button combos needed to build, save, and edit some very satisfying multilayered loops. Those who haven't really put one to good use may dismiss it as a toy, perhaps because it's so easy to use and appeals to more than just trained musicians. But it's an extraordinary little device, particularly considering its portability. I just want to mention one unexpected benefit that I've realized: it's a great tool for meditation. Something about slowly building loops (starting with a thick, swampy bassline for example, or just a string of distorted, echoing phrases), and hearing them go round and round and round in your head . . . it becomes like chanting a mantra. At the end of a session, I feel as if I'm waking up from a deep, hypnotic trance. If you work for a living, include about 15 or 20 minutes of Kaossilator in your lunch hour. Great stress reliever.

Innovative Touch-Pad Control
This is what defines Korg's entire KAOSS PAD/KAOSSILATOR series, and what made 'em such a hit. You play the KAOSSILATOR by moving your finger around on (or tapping on) the touchpad, thereby controlling the sound. The parameters controlled by the X axis and Y axis depend on the preset (for example, a bass synth might feature pitch along the X axis and filter resonance along the Y axis).

Scale/Key Controls
It may not have keys, but the Kaossilator can still play a hook. It lets you control a full two octaves of notes just by touching the pad. To make sure you're playing in the same mode as everyone else, you can choose what kind of scale to use, from 31 different options. You can also set the root note, including flats and sharps, so you're always in tune no matter how wacked out you get on the effects.

Adjustable BPM and Gated Arpeggiator
To get the beat to your desired BPM, you can select a normal MIDI tempo or enter a tap tempo with your finger. The built-in Gate Arpeggiator repeatedly triggers sounds in sync with the tempo. The slider controls either the gate time or gate speed. 50 different gated arpeggiator types are included.

Loop (Phrase) Recording
The KAOSSILATOR can record and playback phrases and patterns that you play on the touch pad--loop style. During playback, you can play along. You can even add another layer to the loop recording. This process can be repeated, adding several new layers. Recorded phrases can be up to 8 beats (2 bars of 4/4) in length.

Portable KAOSS
Create some chaos anywhere you go. The KAOSSILATOR is eminently portable, weighing in at 5.43 oz without batteries, and with dimensions of 4.17 x 5.08 x 1.14 inches. It's powered with four AA batteries, for up to about five hours of operation. You can also snag an optional AC adapter for plugging it in.

"Make music now" with Kaossilator Pro (even if you are not a musician!!).
Like another reviewer here at Amazon, I also got the original kaossilator a couple of years ago and started to spend a lot of time with it. I was reading an article named "Make Music Now" on a magazine related to electronic and computer music when I first learned about the kaossilator. I'm not a musician and, for many reasons, I never allowed myself to learn music. I always had a passion for music, specially with lots of synths like Tangerine Dream, Mike Oldfield, Airsculpture, RedShift, FSOL, Vangelis, Synergy, Passport, Jean-Luc Ponty, etc, etc. I have always been a passive listener, until now. Awesome synth!!
This device is awesome, it's worth the upgrade from a kaossilator although it doesn't have the same features (i.e. arpeggiator).It can be used also as a sampler and has some of the KP3 effects/features as well.Pros: Extensive sounds and synthesizer effects with capabilities of sampling and tweaking of internal and external sources. Can save sounds in SD card. Great built quality.Cons: Doesn't have arpeggiator. Not portable or battery powered (duh). Although I'm in love with this thing, brand new price for this is expensive (in my opinion/budget anyways), I wouldn't pay more than 300 for one that is almost in new condition.

Crazy sound processing, man!
Buy the red and black Mini KP to run your sounds THROUGH. If you want the one to make sounds WITH, you buy the yellow "Kaossilator". That's the short of it. I have both and both are good for different reasons. The yellow Kaossilator is for making phrases. In otherwords in an electronic synthesizer and phrase machine. It also has a beat maker in it and you can modify, record and layer the sounds any way you'd like. The yellow Kaossilator is pretty much a "One-Man-Band" device! Very powerful and I would not consider it just a toy IMO. People can write entire music albums with that one device. Now for the Mini KP Kaos Pad. I Bought this through Amazon for $109 SHIPPED at the time so shop around and you could get lucky. A kaoss pad !!!! at this price???
This is practically a Kaoss Pad at a fraction of the price. a very interesting and useful tool for adding real time special FX to any type of music. Though intended mostly for the DJ or electronic musician this can be very creative and useful any more conventional type of music! you get 100 effects and two memory locations to store your favorite Fxs and settings. a BPM control button that sets the right tempo for the music you are interacting with, very simple to use with spectacular effects at a very reasonable price. For the complete music at your fingertips experience the mini Kaoss pad can also be combined with the Kaossillator finger synth!!!

best kaoss for the money
i have been using kaoss pads for about 6months now,(kp3, and dj mixer wpad), this is my favorite simply cause its so small and runs on batteries, i have a 400cd changer, i run my rca line out to the kaoss in and kaoss out to my receiver, hit random play, and go to work, the fun is instant, from old blues, to hank sr, to joy division bass lines, to world music from the Smithsonian, i find a bank(62!) with cool delay, find a nice spot on the pad, and hit hold, just listen to the whole disc, every once and a while go and the touch the pad and get a whole new sound, very cool machine for those who cant get enough of their favorite cds, this will allow you to manipulate songs, many times, really sounding better than without the effects, or maybe its just more fun but if you want to incorporate into recordings, it takes a little time, mainly cause you have to figure out which effects(total of 100) sound best w different types music, once you get to know each effect, you can do really...

Correct Adapter for Kaossilator
I ordered this because it was paired with the Kaossilator, but I also had my doubts because it looks to be 9v. In fact, I received the KA193 power adapter, which is the recommended (4.5V) adapter for the kaossilator. So it works, fear not.

my favorite toy ,2gb sd card, 100 sample memory bank
first thing, i am no where near a pro with effects and recording equipment, that said, i have a long history with korg, and know from exp they make really good effects and at good prices. this machine is addictive. i want to let potential buyers know what you can do with the kaoss right out of the box, with about 20min w the manual. so it is basically an effects processer, instrument(drum machine and synth) and a sampler(w 4 banks a-d) i have a 400 disc player, and ran the rca through the korg line in, and line out into a 8 track digital recorder. and its just fun. i hit random play, and rarely get past the first 30 seconds of a song. the kaoss makes it very easy to sample any line in, and loops them, you can use up to 4 at a time,and you can save your fav samples on sd cards (2gb max,which you can buy on amazon for 7$,i like kingston) thats just the beginning, once you get a sample or samples, you have a hundred dif effects(phaser, grain,delays, re-verb common effects and...

My new favorite toy!!!
I use the korg kp3 with my turntables as an effect tool and it work incredibly well. the synth portion is kinda lackin but i guess thats why there is a kaossilator pro. this can be used to do minor phasers and filters and you can also get pretty crazy with it. also very fun to use the vocoders or just put filters on your voice. i have not used the sampling features as much as i thought i would but they seem to work very well and all the effects can be applied to your samples. i just cant get enought of this thing.

This thing is a bit pricey but it's feature packed. Though many people have used it almost as a standalone device, it adds worlds of variety to your existing equipment. When I first started using it the Korg Kaossilator I spent hours trying out everything. The touch pad makes it damn near faster and easier as opposed to fiddling with all kinds of knobs. It even doubles as a midi controller,and spectacular at that. The feature's never end, and the build quality is nice and you can save it all to an SD card (2gb is the most supported) or transmit your settings to the computers. Whatever application you use this for it's very diverse and worth getting one.

Great value
This is a great little item. First of all, it's just a lot of fun to use. It very well might be the funnest and most carefree synth of I've ever used. Second, for the size and features, it's just a great value--the filter is awesome, and the type of sound you can get out of this little thing is very surprising. Now, the onboard speaker output can be a bit noisy; however, it isn't bad, and it's very easy to get around that and keep a good quality sound by using aux. input and output with an audio interface (I'm using the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP), just make sure you get the proper cables and adapters and use it as a line input. The aux. input is a great feature, letting you route audio into the unit to make use of the filter--I imagine this is what many people will use this for. Also, the unit is great for circuit bending (see youtube...) and is quite an adaptable machine (and at this price, you can afford to make a mistake during a hack, although...

Hard to put down!
If you don't yet own an analog synth but have always wanted one, this is a fun and relatively cheap way to get started. But be forewarned: you'll have trouble letting go of it once you start. My only (trivial) quibble with the Monotron is that the "keys" are smaller than the width of my finger, which makes playing melodies or bass lines a bit challenging. Granted, the keyboard markings are only meant as a general guide, but with or without the markings it's just a very small playing space to try and play an octave's range of notes. But it still definitely gets the job done. I love this thing. I will be recording with it every chance I get.

It is what it is, but its definitely more than meets the eye
First off let me say that Korg always makes good products and cool innovations. That said, the monotron definitely lives up to the Korg reputation, albeit a few minor flaws. The best feature about this, I would say, would be the ability to channel in audio via a 3.5mm jack and assign modulation and a filter. Its really cool to sequence something on a DAW or keyboard/synth, and then push it thru the monotron and experiment with the settings. Surprisingly, there are quite a number of effects you can get from the mere 5 knobs on the device. This leads me to my main point: The Monotron is an absolutely fantastic device, used in conjunction with other instruments/effects. As a standalone instrument, however, it does suffer from a few minor issues: -limited range of keys (16) and of which are slightly off tune (though you can adjust this manually with a screwdriver...also, apparently ribbon synths are subject to change with temperature) -output is unbalanced, so...
