RODE Rocks!
After spending many days combing the internet and reading review after review I decided to give the RODE VideoMic Directional Camcorder Microphone a try. I wanted something that was good, light, somewhat short and inexpensive. I have a small mini dv camcorder that is only about 5 inches long and didn't want a mic that would get in my viewfinder's shots. The mic sticks out about 5 inches in front of my lens, but manages to stay out of my shots.First let me comment on the sound. This little bugger picks up sounds very well. In a quiet room I can be 40 yards away and still pick up the conversation. The quality is outstanding. The audio compared to the built-in mic in my camcorder is night and day. The Rode is so clear. The price is great. I'm guessing the quality would compare to other mics in the $300 range. My Rode came with a Dead Cat wind screen which resembles a cat's tail. It really saved me some money! At first I didn't use the Dead Cat, but then I ran into...

Excellent Product for both Professional & Non-Professional
The introduction in the owner's manual states it perfectly. Rode said that when looking for a good camcorder microphone, they were either horrible pieces of junk or super expensive professional models and so they decided to design a mic for this purpose. This model strikes a perfect balance. The quality of this mic is excellent. It is very sensitive and has good directional properties so it rejects noise to the side quite well. Although not meant for picking up sound from long distances it can do quite well from 20 feet away and maybe more. The mount is attached to the mic so this is the only way you can use it and it is made to mount to the standard "shoe" that is on nearly all camcorders. It is a mono microphone but it has a stereo miniphone jack that plugs in the camcorder mic jack and feeds the audio into both channels. After trying several inferior microphones I was delighted to stumble upon this mic. It is a good value and an excellent microphone for...

Perfect solution for problematic Canon DSLR hiss
I've been a Canon user and Canon fan for many years, but Canon video cameras always seem to have some sort of sound problem. In the case of Canon DSLRs with video capability, the problem is the loud and annoying hiss that occurs when you use an external microphone in a quiet setting. The first time I used my new Canon 60D to make a video, I quickly realized that the onboard microphone, while adequate for perfect circumstances, was not a good fit for outdoor use or pro-style interviews. I decided to buy an inexpensive $45 shotgun mic - big mistake - which produced the loudest ambient hiss I've ever heard on a recording. After a bit of research, I found that the 60D and other Canon DSLR cameras (and no doubt other brands as well) almost always produce a notable degree of "quiet room hiss" when used with most external microphones--and of course it's usually worse with a cheap mic. Further research led to further frustration, with all the "experts" suggesting that quality in-camera...

Great for Canon DSLR videos...if you have the right settings.
Other reviewers have gone way more in depth and with much more eloquence than I ever could about this microphone. I won't even try to match it. However, I will give you the best info you will need on a Canon DSLR with manual audio control.Turn on the microphone. Plug it into the camera. Set the top switch on the microphone to the high pass filer setting. Set the bottom swtich to +20 dB. Turn the camera on. Go into the audio settings and switch them to manual. Set it to the lowest setting possible, then increase it four notches. You're welcome.Seriously, out of the box, you're going to get a notable hiss (like in all Canon DSLR footage) and you're going to think this only adds slightly to your footage audio. If you use these settings, they are the best, and recommended from Rode (though not in the manual).I actually made a video reviewing the mic and all the settings therein. In the video you can hear exactly what kind of output...

Product Description

The Rode VideoMic Pro compact design is ideal for use with HDSLR cameras, camcorders and audio recorders. Noise transference has been significantly reduced using both a revised, more elegant shock mounting system and a lightweight premium cable. The microphone has a broadcast-quality condenser capsule with a supercardioid pickup pattern to capture audio from the front, while minimizing pickup from the sides and rear. An integrated shockmount and foam windscreen minimize handling and wind noise to keep your recordings crystal clear. On the rear of the mic, you'll find a 3-way level control that offers -10dB, 0dB, and +20dB modes. There is also a 2-step high pass filter with 0 and 80Hz settings, letting you minimize the impact of low frequency hum, camera motor noise, and similar distractions. The mic has a standard camera shoe and a 3/8 inch threaded mount for easy attachment to cameras and boom poles. The 1/8 inch (3.5mm) plug is compatible with a wide variety of different cameras and audio devices. The VideoMic Pro operates for up to 70 hours on a single 9V battery, allowing you to work in the field without constant replacements. Top to learn more

Compact, great mic
I bought this Rode VideoMic Pro Compact Shotgun microphone to go with my Panasonic TM900 camcorder since I travel a lot shooting interviews etc. I needed something that was light and compact in keeping with the scale of the TM900. I had very bad experiences with the Sennheiser MKE300 - wow has that company gone downhill. The Sennheiser had a constant hum and static and I couldn't get enough volume out of it.I have the Rode Videomic which is good but is too big for the TM900 and I've found it unwieldy for traveling (somehow its Z shape and those rubber bands don't give me a lot of confidence). The Videomic Pro however is almost a perfect match for the TM900. It fits well into the bracket and there's no problem with fitting the plug into the camera's mic socket (which is set at an angle). I also fitted a larger ring wide angle adapter(the EXII HD7X46)and this does not interfere with the mic.The audio from the mic is great - it's quite sensitive but...

Bit pricey but works greate

Customer Review

Excellent price for excellent product!
I was a little skeptical about this product at first given how little of a description it had, but after doing research elsewhere and deciding that this was the best price for this product, I am very satisfied with this purchase.I shot this video using this microphone: [...] I filmed with a refurbished Canon Vixia HFS200, which was the first time I used that camera as well. There could have been a little more audio editing, but all in all the audio quality is not bad given what I set out to do, which was to make an online video, not an Oscar nominated film. With that in mind the audio is great, and much better than any on-board microphone that was initially installed on the camera. Again, if you want clean audio for a decent price, this is a great way to go.

Best mic at this price point
The best sub-$200 mic out there. Mounts directly onto the cameras hot-shoe and comes with a good quality shock mount and extra bands. There's an optional filter which I've never used but the typical full-on provides great quality audio which I've used on location, in studio and for a few minor foley sounds. Upwards from this I'd still recommend Rode with the NTG-2 and beyond that it's Sennheiser but then you're getting to $500+.A few drawbacks: the coverage area is a bit wide, it's mono (not stereo) and the cord can cause some awful noise if you don't wrap it carefully.

Product Description

This VideoMic from Rode is a cost effective shotgun microphone that can easily be mounted on a video camera because it features an integrated shockmount that attaches to the camera's shoe. The VideoMic is lightweight, and when mounting on a camera it does not appear in the frame. Fuzzy Windjammer is made of an artificial rabbit fur material for maximum protection against wind noise. Its super-cardioid polar pattern attenuates sounds from the sides. The result is a signal that sounds closer to the camera, even when shooting in noisy environments or at moderate distances. Great Sound, Great Company
Customer Video Review Length:: 0:31 MinsI have a Canon HG10 High Definition camera that I use for recording my small kids and family events. The camera's built-in sound was just poor. With my default mic, the targets could barely be heard, and whenever the cameraman spoke the sound was overly pronounced. So I researched many mics over months and decided on this one.The sound is superb, but you have to make sure you know what you are working with. Different mics are better for different situations. I am not an expert but here are the rules of thumb I have picked up.*Super-Cartoid Stereo Mic*The Rode Stereo mic is a "Super Cartoid Stereo Mic". It yields high-quality sound at a close range, less than 8 feet or closer is best . It emphasizes sound in front, and de-emphasizes sound from behind (i.e. the cameraman) It does not do well at long range.*Shotgun mics*Shotgun mics (i.e...

Jeremy Libertor (another reviewer) said it all. I fully concur. I'm using the microphone on a Canon 5D Mark II with great success. I highly recommend this unit if you want quality and have the $$$. Yes, there are less expensive units around but you get what you pay for. And the included 'dead-cat" does a nice job killing wind noises as well.UPDATE: May 1st - I used the Canon 5D Mark II and the Rode to video the Union Pacific's Steam Locomotive (844) when it visited hear. Theyre was a light breeze at the time. A steam locomotive, at times 4 feet away from the mic, is the acid test. Every sound, from quiet hisses of small steam escapes to full throated steam locomovive whistle blasts, were recorded perfectly with the Rode.Later, down the track, the 844 passed by me at 60 or so MPH and I got broadcast quality locomotive sounds from about 1000 feet away and as it passed my location 8 feet from the camera/mic. Perfect sound again. I now highly...
