This is One Impressive Book!
Windows Server 2008 R2 Unleashed is a superior, comprehensive reference book making it a true must have for every system administrator. First, the book itself is huge, totaling 1680 pages. A daily answers guide to R1 and R2
Stanek is the best of the best in computer writing for a reason. He's both a professional writer and one of thew few technical gurus Microsoft looks to. Thanks to one of Stanek's other books, I lead our deployment of Windows Server 2008 the first time. Now we're preparing for R2, I did my homework again and again chose one of his books to help me -- this one. This book, Windows Server 2008 Administrators Pocket Consultant Second Edition, covers the R1 and R2 releases of Windows Server 2008. I found it had a good balance of both step by steps and expanded details. There are many new features in R2 and this one covers most of them and in sufficient enough depth. Whether you are working with R1 only or with both R1+R2, I can't see how you can go wrong with this one.

Great Resource For Windows 2008 Admins
'Windows Server 2008 Administrator's Pocket Consultant' is a great resource for IT admins that need to have a quick guide at their fingertips. With nearly 700 pages of material spread over 20 chapters, this is a solid piece of writing. The thing I really like about it is the size. It easily fits in your hand and is perfect for travelling with. This might seem like a minor point, but it really isn't.Let's take a look at the Table of Contents01. Overview of Windows 2008 R202. Hand reference
I was building just a test box to bring Server 2008R2 into our environment. I'm using Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration Instant Reference to setup a Windows 2008R2 environment. This book is helpful figuring out a few things we didn't see in the reference guide. It's there we just didn't see it. We found this out later.

Incredible Resource!!!
I went to the Windows 2008 launch event and got excited about migrating our company to Windows 2008, but wanted to get a third party book to help me better understand the REAL features, functions, and experiences of the product (rather than Microsoft's rendition of it). I jumped on Amazon and searched for a book, and this Windows 2008 Unleashed book was already rated with a couple 5-stars, so I bought it. I just got it last week.At first, I was a little overwhelmed as the book is almost 2-inches thick and hard bound (definitely worth the cost for the shear volume and amount of paper it took to print this book)! I read the introduction chapter and got a lot more comfortable with Windows 2008 as the author provided a really good comparison of Windows 2008 to Windows 2003 (which I already know pretty well). The intro chapter also gave me links to different parts of the book that helped me organize the way I was going to review the text of the book (I prioritized chapters...

Excellent Book!
I've been waiting for a complete book on Windows 2008, and glad to have gotten in a pre-order and purchase of this book! 1400+ pages!!! I jumped straight to the migration chapter as we're looking for tips on how to plan our migration from Windows 2003. Very complete and detailed process along with tips and hints, which was great to see someone has actually done the migrations before and could share best practices! I also found the chapter on clustering and high availability (chapter 29) to cover the new Windows 2008 clustering in detail as being very helpful! And since we have several sites, Chapter 32 on branch office was a good read! I think I'm only 120 pages thru the most pertinent chapters to me, but expect to read the thing cover to cover. GREAT book, I highly recommend it!!!

Lots of theory. Not so much practice.
This is a great book if you're looking for a lot of general information on the features of different aspects of server 2008. I pulled a lot of valuable information out of this book, and I'm glad I bought it. Unfortunately, it includes very little information on actually implementing this theory. I did learn a lot from the book. But for the most part, it would explain the theory in great detail, but then I'd have to hit google to figure out how to put this theory into practice. I do recommend the book, but don't expect it to be your only, or even primary, source.

Great reference book for experienced and inexperienced users
You could start at the beginning and read all the way through 'Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration Instant Reference' by Matt Hester and Chris Henley. Part 1 of the book of the book ("Getting Started") walks the reader through planning, installing and upgrading the operating system, while subsequent sections dive into details about specific areas of the software. But a more reasonable approach is to open to the section on which you are working today. Each chapter is structured so that you can dig into the detail you need. Each topic begins with an explanation of concepts and definitions of key terms. This part is critical for someone like me, who doesn't spend his days managing servers. Experienced administrators may skip this section and jump to the detailed explanations of how to use and configure each feature of Windows Server 2008 R2. Basic functionality is described first, followed by more advanced features.A section on Active Directory, for example,...

This book saves lives
I have had my copy for over a month and I can't live without it. I am mainly a Unix sysadmin and am actually pretty rusty with Windows Server 2008. This book has helped me build a completely functional domain and forest from the ground up on my own. I couldn't get by without it. Much more convenient than reading 60 articles on the web. Great reference and the author is very clear about even the most minute tasks.Highly recommend for administrators and anyone interested in Windows Server infrastructure!

In sum, I wouldn’t say it’s a perfect book but it really helped me and I doubt I would have made the grade w/o it. The “Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Training Kit” series was highly recommended to me by an Instructor. While I felt the book was an excellent preparation, when I took the practice tests, I felt like the book was insufficient. Many of the questions covered topics that were not addressed in the book, or gave very detailed and almost obscure questions on topics that were not addressed. Each section has a 20 question quiz, but for answers you are given only the number of the question and the letter of the multiple choice answer, e. g. 1. If you have any experience with SQL Server you will find many things stated in this book that you know are just not true. These questions led me to realize that I was prepared for the exam, despite a low score on the practice tests – a realization that was quite accurate. After my second pass through the book and another attempt at the exams, I had the feeling that the practice tests were a bit unrealistic. The lead authors are well known in the SQL Server world and certainly understand their material. Two: If you read and study this book you are likely to pass the exam despite the serious problems of accuracy in the material. There were a few chapters that I felt should have been placed in different areas of the book, but only because they would have led into one another better in a different order, as opposed to the frequent forward references they made. The problem is that when an author tells you something that is patently false, you have to call in question all the new things you might have learned in that section of the book.
