Not For Beginners
At $30, this kalimba is an excellent value and I plan to buy a couple more for various tunings. However, the MidEast Music kalimba is not an instrument for beginning musicians. As noted in the negative reviews below, it is very difficult to tune due to the thicker tines. However, once tuned the added mass provides a much warmer tone than the Hugh Tracy kalimba. That added thickness also makes the instrument a bit more difficult to play, but more difficult like a guitar set up for jazz or the heavier action of a concert piano. Also, the MidEast Music kalimba comes with no manual or tuning instructions and finding that information on the web was not an easy Google search. To tune this instrument, I had to buy a small punch and a tack hammer; pliers didn't cut it and I doubt anyone could tune this instrument without these tools. That said, once this kalimba IS tuned, it stays in tune! Finally, the tines arrived rough and unpolished, and they would tear up someone's...

Product Description

Kalimba. Origin Country: Pakistan. 2.1 lbs. Made by Mid-East.

Rosewood thumb piano, 5" x 7", 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. The thumb piano originates in Africa. It is also known as the mbira or likembe. The metal keys are mounted on a wooden box that acts as the resonating chamber. To play, rest the thumb piano on the fingers of both hands and hold it between your palms. Cover the vibrato holes with your fingers. Then pluck the keys with your thumbs. As you play you can un-cover and cover the vibrato holes as you like. Many different tunings are acceptable, according to personal preference. Specific tuning of a thumb piano is only an issue when two instruments are played together; then they should generally agree in tuning. Otherwise, the tuning is subjective and should only be pleasing to the player. The longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches. The keys can be adjusted by tapping them in or out to adjust their length, and therefore their pitch. Top to learn more

Relaxing fun!
When I was in college, a friend of mine owned a kalimba and allowed me to borrow it for a few days. I found that picking out tunes on it was fun and relaxing, and that I enjoyed the sound. When I saw this item on line, I decided to see if that would still be true. It is! The instrument was delivered promptly, and was well packaged. It is sturdy, and the wood grain is pleasing to the eye. The only reason I didn't give this five stars was that it was shipped badly out of tune, but that was corrected after a brief search on the Internet. It sounds wonderful now! Another thing to watch for is that tiny amounts of the chrome plating on the keys might flake off a bit at first, so you might want to give them a good wiping down to avoid getting any metal splinters. Overall, I'm glad I have it.

Kalimba Therapy
The previous reviewer is right. I've made my own kalimbas or thumb pianos from things around the house - they aren't that hard to make. But this is a good price for a kalimba with a good sound and simple number of keys. The rewards from playing this instrument are phenomenal when just played with for an hour or two. It seems like it would be a waste of time, but it isn't. You'd be amazed at how fast an hour goes by while plucking the keys in singles and in pairs. The angels will indeed sing you into a much more relaxed and contemplative mood.Whether you play in the morning to set you at ease before going to work, or play before bed time to set you in the right mood for dreaming, this "toy" is a very powerful mood altering drug. Use it in excess, safely, knowing that the only harm it might do you is sore thumbs and the occasional cracked thumbnail. The benefits are endless.Eight keys is a minimum. More is better. But any number of 8 or more...

Pleasantly surprised
I really didn't know what to expect, i had never heard of a thumb piano before. My girlfriend got me this for Christmas and i am loving it! It has the sound of an angels voice. No such thing as waking up on the wrong side of the bed anymore...try it out in the morning.

Beautiful Sound & Fine Motor Skill Strengthening
We ordered this for our 17 year old son with Down Syndrome, who loves music, dancing, and musicals. It makes beautiful sound, and upon opening it, I was able to pluck out a tune, and I don't play an instrument. This is a great tool for Occupational Therapy hand/finger strengthening. Our son really enjoys it, and is subtly developing strength and skills needed for fine motor activities like handwriting, while gaining an appreciation for the beautiful and soothing sound that it produces. Definitely worth the money. Very reasonable priced.

Wrong item
I don't know how this instrument sounds as I was sent a cheaper version instead of this one which I ordered for just under $19.00. The one I received was nice enough, but I was disappointed. Be careful to check that they are sending you the correct instrument when you get to check out and that the price isn't around $13.00. Amazon didn't bother to let me know they were making a substitution.

Product Description

This
beautifully crafted sea turtle shaped Karimba (also knows as a kalimba,
Mbira or Thumb Piano) is hand made from a coconut shell, with the legs,
tail and head hand carved from Indonesian Albessia wood.
Metal keys are suspended above the acoustic chamber and when plucked
with the fingers or thumbs make a delightfully rich note.

This
gorgeous mbira is great for use as a decoration, and makes a great
educational gift for children. NOTE: Because these are hand-carved,
there may be slight differences in design from the pictures. They
also
vary in size based on the size of the coconut used but they are about 9
to 10 inches long. We
have a limited supply of these, so don't delay. Get yours now!

not a precise instrument but good to have non-the-less
This kalimba sits in our livingroom and when it isn't being used its job is to 'sit pretty'. The 'tines' aren't exactly tuned very carefully, when they move you have to sort of tune it again but it does have a good chimy sound. (When we first got it the sound made my dog think someone rang the doorbell and she'd run to the door!) This is a good 'starter kalimba' for fun, not for the serious percussion music enthusiast.

Got what I paid for
Picked this up on a whim without much experience in Kalimbas/Thumb Pianos. I can say that it did arrive detuned, which was to be expected. You're going to need some type of tool to tune this because the metal slats are in there pretty tightly. This isn't a big deal though. I plan on tuning this to standard western tuning. You're also going to need some sort of fingernail growth to play this. The sound is good, very warm. A nice mid-range, neither too much bass or too much treble. No buzzy noises or notes that don't work.
