Excellent beginner's ukulele
I've been wanting to learn ukulele for a while now and the price of the Lanikai LU-21P convinced me to finally get one.The ukulele arrived in a coffin shaped box with some thin foam padding and an instructional booklet. The booklet contains some quick instructions on how to tune your new instrument and also a short introduction to reading ukulele tabs. It also comes with tabs and lyrics for:- Row, row, row your boat- He's got the whole world in his hands- Are you sleeping?- Twinkle, twinkle little star- Amazing grace- When Irish eyes are smilingThe ukulele itself is extemely light weight, but I wouldn't expect much more for such an inexpensive ukulele. Everything seems to be made of a light wood except for the frets and tuning gears which are metal. The tuning knobs are plastic. The strings are made from something called Nylgut, which look like thick fishing line. Despite the light weight, the construction feels very...

great little instrument
I was looking for uke stuff and noticed there was no review for this little guy. I'm originally a guitar player but after my second deployment to iraq started looking around for a more portable instrument, a guitar is always welcome at a FOB (ends up being passed around enough to be almost community property) but it just takes up too much room in an uparmored humvee or chinook or what have you. I was looking at things like the martin backpacker but it seemed like too much of a compromise, I thought about picking up the violin but playing one badly is liable to create tension in tight quarters, so I eventually found my way to the humble ukulele. The main problem was the *image* of the thing, the whole steely eyed killer routine kind of clashes with the tiny tim stereotype of the uke. But I persevered, did a lot of research and settled on this.I think it's just about the perfect starter ukulele, it's got a nice warm tone, the shape helps I think almost as much as the quality...

Great for Beginners & Dabblers
i'll make this short and to-the-point (no life story here): the Lanikai LU-21P is a great starter ukulele for someone who needs to learn the basics or wants to figure out if this instrument is for them. i know there were some complaints about the strings not staying tuned and being of "cheap" quality, however, this is not so. one must always tune and re-tune brand new strings a couple times. this is normal for stringed instruments and does not mean they are cheap. while the body itself is on the cheaper side (Nato wood: the body won't last too long and the sound is pretty shallow) the strings are Aquila Nylgut, which are some of the best out there. altogether, i found this instrument to be very easy to tune. the accompanying book is pretty useless, i suggest searching YouTube for tuning help.a side note: if you're a fan of Beirut, i read that Zach Condon uses a Lanikai LU-21, which is the standard-shaped version of this ukulele.anyway, i wish you luck in your...

Product Description

Early praise: 'Here, at last, is the complete story of the 'ukulele. Thanks to the authors' years of tireless research, the instrument's incredible journey is brought vividly to life. This book is a labor of love and a gift of enduring scholarship.' --Jim Beloff, author of The Ukulele: A Visual History

Since its introduction to Hawaii in 1879, the 'ukulele has been many things: a symbol of an island paradise; a tool of political protest; an instrument central to a rich musical culture; a musical joke; a highly sought-after collectible; a cheap airport souvenir; a lucrative industry; and the product of a remarkable synthesis of western and Pacific cultures. The 'Ukulele: A History explores all of these facets, placing the instrument for the first time in a broad historical, cultural, and musical context.

Drawing on a wealth of previously untapped sources, Jim Tranquada and John King tell the surprising story of how an obscure four-string folk guitar from Portugal became the national instrument of Hawaii, of its subsequent rise and fall from international cultural phenomenon to 'the Dangerfield of instruments,'; and of the resurgence in popularity (and respect) it is currently enjoying among musicians from Thailand to Finland. The book shows how the technologies of successive generations (recorded music, radio, television, the Internet) have played critical roles in popularizing the 'ukulele. Famous composers and entertainers (Queen Liliuokalani, Irving Berlin, Arthur Godfrey, Paul McCartney, SpongeBob SquarePants) and writers (Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, P. G. Wodehouse, Agatha Christie) wind their way through its history along with a host of outstanding Hawaiian musicians (Ernest Kaai, George Kia Nahaolelua, Samuel K. Kamakaia, Henry A. Peelua Bishaw). In telling the story of the 'ukulele, Tranquada and King also present a sweeping history of modern Hawaiian music that spans more than two centuries, beginning with the introduction of western melody and harmony by missionaries to the Hawaiian music renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s.

Best ukulele player
The modest little ukulele, brought to Hawaii by early Portuguese settlers was never intended to be a major solo instrument. A Portuguese folk instrument, called "cavaquinho", in Portugal it is used for rapid strumming in folk dances, using usually simple chord changes. The cavaquinho was also exported to Brazil where it is called the same as in Portugal, and essentially played the same way as the Portuguese, but with the syncopated rhythms of the Samba and other popular music. Even in Hawaii, the uke has been mainly used as an accompanying instrument, strummed with fairly basic chords. Until now... Jake Shimabukuro has taken the lowly uke to an entirely new level. Don't even think Tiny Tim or Portuguese and Brazilian folk tunes. This guy is a legit virtuoso. What he does with this instrument is nothing short of amazing. Complex chords, fancy solos, all with just four strings. Sometimes you have to wonder if he is cheating. But when you see him live you can't believe what you are...

Jake Shimabukuro makes magic on the ukulele.
Jake Shimabukuro takes ukulele playing to a new level with "Peace Love Ukulele". He is proof that beautiful music can be made without singing a single word. My favorite track is "Bohemian Rhapsody. I have never heard this classic rock tune played on an ukulele. Every chord is so soothing on this track. "Go For Broke" is a patriotic tune for the soldiers. This is a very moving composition. "Bring Your Adz" is another original composition. Jake proves that a fast paced ukulele song can be enjoyable with this song. "One Four Three" is a pretty ukulele love song. This song puts me in a great mood. I love the song Hallelujah, but I have never heard it an instrumental version of it before. It sounds absolutely breathtaking. He conveys so much emotion with his instrument on this song. "Five Dollars Unleaded" is a fun song about gasoline. This song is light in beginning. The tempo of the song is serious in the middle and light again in the end. "Piano Forte" is an ukulele song...

A young virtuoso pushing the envelope -- listen to his NPR and Rolling Stone concerts and interviews
Jake Shimabukuro is almost certainly the finest Hawaiian ukulele player performing today. He infuses tradition with a modern sensibility and reworks contemporary music in a classic style. "Peace Love Ukulele," his newest solo album, is wonderfully intricate and soothing. Also check out his 2006 album, Gently Weeps, and his NPR page, which features an interview and clips from several concerts. At the Rolling Stone website, you can watch intimate performances of the first three songs on this CD, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," its centerpiece.

cute but cracked!
My little hula girl is so cute but when she arrived she was cracked! Both of her ankles were cracked and she didnt stay on the stand very well either. Meaning when she wiggles she falls off the stand, from her waist down just toppels right over! My husband used super glue to fix her ankles and he ended up gluing her waist that jiggles to the stand. Like I say, it is cute but she was cracked....

Everyone needs a bobble-head..in my case, a Hula Dancer! This dancer was delivered in fine time, excellent condition and was everything anticipated when the order was placed. She is simply stunning on my dashboard, particularly when the skys grow dark and snowflakes make their way past my windshield...and I find myself wishing I was sitting on the beautiful white sand of the Hawaiian Islands.Marti MelvilleAuthor of "Deja vu: Farriage"[...]

Nice but . . . .
The doll looks great, awesome hula skirt, bobbles just the way I expected, but the doll cracked around the ankles all the way around in shipment. Should have been shipped in a form fitted styrafoam. I had to glue it all the way around in hopes of it not breaking, taking away from it's beauty.

Lelani Dashboard Hula Girl Review
I recently bought this as a Christmas present for one of my best friends. He's been bragging about his first car since the rest of us don't have a car yet, so I got him this as a twist on the classic dashboard hula girl. He loved it, and it's simply great, although a little fragile. Definitely a great find.

This was everything I hoped it would be & more. I was surprised when I opened the box because she's pretty solid & actually really decent quality for the price. Only problem is the adhesive strip that she comes with. I think I'm gonna superglue her to my dash.

Buy Ukulele Hawaii

To make it easier to take your ukulele home with you, I’d recommend buying a soprano ukulele (sometimes referred to as a “standard” ukulele). Alongside those souvenir stands, you’ll find around a half-dozen ukulele vendors set up. Some are smaller than others, so it’s worth making a complete loop of the stalls, before buying an ukulele. Music Guy Mike is the resident ukulele guru (along with Jennifer and Andrew Kitakis who started the store in 2005) and he’s a friendly guy–willing to help even the most discerning ukulele player find their perfect uke. While most of the ukuleles here will be either non-branded, you will find some ukuleles that have a solid reputation for entry level ukes–Lanikai and Kala being two that I recommend. The soprano ukulele also tends to be a lot cheaper than its larger siblings–the concert size, tenor size, and baritone ukulele. Meanwhile, most ukuleles in the $40 to $150 price range are fabulous instruments and make great ukuleles to learn on and grow your playing abilities. For a $1 a person, you can walk around hundreds of stalls and pick up all the Hawaii souvenirs you could possibly want to take home. What can I say about Hawaii Music Supply.

Can we have a word about 19a: UKES , [ Luau strings ]. Whenever I hear friends talking about buying a ukulele or read about the instrument, it’s invariably “ukulele. The Cruciverb database shows 189 UKE and 123 UKES (seldom with any clue hint at the shortening), 4 UKELELE (a variant spelling, per at least one dictionary), and zero UKULELE. Dictionary lists “uke” as an informal word that’s short for ukulele, so it’s legitimate fill, but I wonder who uses the word.  JAZZ CLUB IMPROV Straightforward enough, although (1) “jazz club improv” doesn’t feel in-the-language enough to me and (2) I’m typically underwhelmed by “the long answers all define the same word” themes. So the UVEA at 61a, it’s clued as [ Colored part of the eye ]. Finally looked this puppy up. The iris is the outermost of three layers of the uvea, I gather. it shows ”extensive iris atrophy with polycoria and ectropion uvea in a patient with progressive iris atrophy. Despite Bill KURTIS ‘s longtime Chicago home (he was an anchor on the local news before he went national), I was mildly disappointed that this answer wasn’t clued with reference to Kurtis Blow of early rap fame. New to me: HAFIZ , [ Koran memorizer ]. Do you think North Pole explorer PEARY was ever called SMEARY PEARY by the other kids. Good stuff: OLD FOGEY, SQUEAKER, MAKE NICE, SHOOK UP , and UPSCALE (I like both of the UP entries enough that the appearance of two UPs doesn’t make me grouse about dupes). I save the grousing for 24a: ‘ OME , [ Where to 'ang one's 'at ]. People with England experience: How valid is OME. ” I have yet, I think, to encounter “uke” outside of crosswords.
