Good set for your pocket and hunting knives at a low cost
I bought this set in 1972 for, as I recall, $5.99 + tax. It has served me well over the years, and I have sharpened many pocket and hunting knives of various sizes and blade shapes on it since. Surely one can get bigger, better stones for more money, but for the price paid for this set now days, and for the average knife, it does a fine job. (No pun intended.) One just has to learn how to use it correctly to obtain the best results.I don't think the kit has changed much since '72. Back then, the bigger of the two stones, a 5" Soft (medium) Arkansas Stone was attached to a wooden base, making it much easier to use in a safer manner than a shorter stone or one without a base. But the draw backs to that is, you only get to use one side of the stone. I found the 4" Hard Arkansas (fine) Stone, though a great stone able to put a very fine edge on a blade, a bit difficult to use because of its short length. It took quite a bit of consistent use to form a habit of sharpening at...

Works as intended, low cost, slight chipping
Not much to say about this. It cuts metal quickly and the fine side gives a great edge. It's solid and sturdy and will last a few years. There was some slight chipping on the edge and that's the only reason I took off a star.

Works for me....
I have an earlier version of this stone set with a wood base for the larger stone...essentially the same. I've been using the larger stone to hone a large chef's knife and a small collection of camping and kitchen knives.I made a wedge shaped "jig" out of cardboard with a 20* angle to it...in order to be sure I was staying near the 20* that the instructions specify.I also glued a sheet of rubberized shelving material to the back of the large stone...so it will stay put on a table and allow me to keep my left hand away from the blade when sharpening...a major improvement.Probably best to use a coarser stone to get the factory edge down to where this stone set can hone a final edge. This stone with the oil works well with small to large knives....allowing you to hone right up near the handle when wanted. You can shape up a larger knife with fewer strokes than you might think.I use several methods to determine the need for...

Sharpening Instructions

  1. Put a small amount of honing solution on your stone. Don't use a lot of lubricant as a small amount goes a long way. Using a natural stone without a lubricant or water will damage and clog your stone. It protects the stone and the cutting edge of the knife or tool by washing away the particle of stone and metal created during the sharpening process. If necessary, water can be used as a substitute.

  2. To insure the proper sharpening angle on your knife, place the yellow Smith's angle guide at the end of your stone. This shows you the proper angle we recommend to use in order to obtain the sharpest edge. Next, place your blade flat on the angle guide at the end of the stone. Now you are ready to begin the sharpening process.

  3. Push the blade away from you just like you are trying to carve a thin slice off the top of the stone. Don't be afraid to use pressure against the stone while sharpening since it will not damage the stone or your knife. Repeat this pushing stroke three or four times. Remember, try to keep the same approximate sharpening angle all the time, since this is the key to obtaining the sharpest edge.

  4. To sharpen the other side of your knife, simply place your blade at the opposite end of your Smith sharpening stone and repeat the above steps, but instead of pushing the knife away from you, pull it towards you. Continue to sharpen until you feel that your blade is truly sharp.

Care

Cleaning your stones will keep the pores free of stone and metal particles. After each use, the Arkansas stones should be cleaned by scrubbing vigorously with water, liquid soap, and a stiff nylon brush.

Talk about sharp!
I bought this sharpening system for my Henckels, they are the light of my kitchen and I use them daily for cooking. I hadn't sharpened them since I bought them and the honing just wasn't doing it anymore. I shopped around and found this item at my local hardware store for TWICE the price, so I bought mine here on Amazon.I agree with one of the other reviewers on the size - they are a little small for full size knives, requiring the user to work just a little bit harder. This is the only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. This sharpening system got my knives razor sharp - literally. I was able to shave hair from my forearm with my Santoku after sharpening with this product. The kit is well made, with the plastic parts being very thick and durable - I expect it to last a while.Because the base is smooth and flat, I recommend putting it down on something non stick (I used a damp towel) when sharpening larger knives, it helped a lot.

A Good and Needed Product
If you have kitchen knives, and don't have some sort of tri-stone sharpener, you'll be surprised to use it and find out how sharp a knife should be or could be. The pro's and con's are this:Pro- comes with the stones already set in the unit, comes with the oil (don't ever skip the oil), good seatting for the stones. Good Price to move beyond an entry level single stone, but not as costly as the 10 inch, $100 models.Con-I wish it was about 2 inches longer. A person has to be careful with a Santoku knife or butcher's knife to not run the blade off the end and nick it before you draw the entire length of the blade. In reality, you should have an inch of stone to every inch of blade. This is a good starting point for someone wanting to sharpen their knives on an amateur level. (this is not idustrial in any way).

Everything I expected
This sharpener is well made. Although somewhat small for large knives it performs adequately. Included extras (honing guide and oil) were appreciated and useful. I would recommend this item to consumers with basic knife sharpening needs. Might not be suitable for commercial use or large cutlery.

Very Easy and Effective
I don't have a thousand dollar knife set, but I love to cook and all of my knives were quite dull. We tried a couple of the "sharpener systems" without a satisfying result. I remembered as a little girl seeing the old timers sharpen their pocket knives with a stone, so I did a little searching and found this one.It arrived quickly and well packaged. The instructions are understandable enough, but clearly translated by a person whose native language is not English. My husband spent about 1 hour and all my knives were good as new. First you soak the stone in water for about 5 minutes. Then you run the blade along the stone in the pattern indicated. There will be a bit of sand residue, so you will want to set it on something that washes well (dish towel). Also, it will stay wet for a long time. I had to wait 2 days to put it away.Note, you will still need a knife steel to keep the blade nice.If you Google "sharpening knives" you will...

Fantastic companion to my Shun collection
As a restaurant worker who has a rather large collection of shun knives, I purchased this whetstone because I was in the market to upgrade from an old oil stone to something a little easier to use. My oil stone was definitely showing signs of wear. So solely on the advice from a colleague who also uses shun knives, I ordered up.I expected a good product based upon the shun name but this really exceded my expectations. It is a fantastic whetstone to have and to use for a couple of reasons. First, the price is reasonable (like are you kidding me?? a shun product for less than $100!?!). Secondly, my old stone didn't seem to have the best combination of grit - a coarse and a medium - whereas this shun stone has a coarse and a fine and believe it or not that fine grit really makes all the difference in the world between getting those shun knives back to their original razor edge as it will do for any knife. Thirdly, the ease of which this is done is amazing. With several...

Good whetstone, however...
This is a fine whetstone, the fact that it has a Shun logo stamped on it is beside the point really as it has no bearing on the performance and I am relatively positive it is not made by KAI/Kershaw anyways. The reason I detract one star is because you can not achieve a factory 'mirrorlike' edge with this whetstone. The fine side of the stone is 1000 grit, whereas you need at least a 3000 grit and probably more realistically a 5-6000 grit stone as well as very good technique to achieve a mirror like professional edge. That is not to say you cannot achieve a very sharp edge with 1000grit, you can, but it does have noticably more drag when cutting things like tomatoes and it will not stay sharp as long.Shun does sell another combination stone which is 1000/3000 grit so I would probably choose that one over this one if I was only going to have one whetstone. I would say it is not that often that your knives will get dull enough to really need the 300 grit coarse...

Product Description

To achieve a surgically sharp edge on your tools, nothing works faster or better than Japanese water stones. The abrasive slurry produced on top of the stone cuts aggressively and polishes the blade as it sharpens. If you've never tried sharpening with water stones before, you'll be astounded by the results. Combo Stone, 1000/6000 Grit. Top to learn more

Decent performance and reasonably priced
I bought this stone for $30. It is more expensive compared to typical oil stones which only cost $3-10. However, a waterstone grinds more uniform and the resulting edges are more polished. This combination 1000 + 6000 grit Japanese waterstone is 2" wide, 8" long and 1" deep. It is an artificial water stone. A waterstone works fast and consistent because it constantly reveals new grinding surfaces. This also means it wears out fast and one must keep its surface flat by lapping the stone frequently. This stone is fairly soft even for a waterstone, so I need to lap the stone once per knife, unless I am doing a compound bevel edge, then I may do one more when I switch the angle. I recommend getting a diamond stone for lapping, like this: ,...

Worked Well for Me With Honing Guide
I'm a novice at woodworking and I didn't go for five stars here only because I am not able to see, for lack of anything much to compare it to, that the product is really superlative.I used it only with the Robert Larson 800-1800 Honing Guide that I also got from Amazon, and I first read the relevant portions of The Complete Guide to Sharpening and The Handplane Book [Illustrated]. (Those all seem to be good-to-very-good items too, by the way.)With all of that preparation, how could I go wrong? Well, I didn't. I managed to do a pretty good job on a Stanley plane iron that, as purchased, was not only unsharpened but never properly ground.Tip #1 (unless you know more than me, and you well may): if you have to grind a bevel flat and the 1000 grit side of this waterstone is too fine for that, tape a cheap sheet of wet-and-dry 600-grit sandpaper down to a flat surface (I simply used a Formica tabletop) and grind first with that. This will conserve your...

Combo 1K Grit and 6K Grit Water stone
I rated this stone 4 stars. First of all i like the fact it had 2 grits on both sides. It sharpened to a mirror like finish. However waterstone tend to wear very easily, and the thickness of each grits is only 1/2 inch. The overall stone was 1 in so each side has 1/2 inch of the stone. The waterstone wore out very quick resulting in my lapping my stone every 3-4 chisel or plane irons.

wet stone
This is very fine wet stone. Requires care in use. If you are a person who just wants to sharpen your knife in 2 seconds this product is not for you. For one this it is recommended that the stone is placed constantly in water, or at the very least for 15 minutes before every use. You cannot use oil on this stone because it will ruin the stone (thus the name). On the positive side it sharpens the knife very finely and I have very good experince with it thus far.

Good edge, useful as a finishing stone
This was my first Japanese waterstone. Some things I didn't realize before I purchased:1) It's recommended that the stone is kept immersed in water during storage. Otherwise, soak it for 15 minutes in water before use.2) It's much softer than a traditional whetstone.3) Honing oil will destroy it.4) It's much larger than I expected (good). My first test was on a Mora knife of 57 HRC (advertised). There was quite a bit of slurry produced in the initial sharpening. Unfortunately, the Mora had shipped with a edge burr that was not easily removed with this stone. I went back to a traditional 800 grit stone and removed the burr, then went back and finished with the Japanese waterstone. It gave a very good edge, probably as good as a higher grit with a traditional stone.I also used it on some Wenger SAKs and it performed well.

Great stone for getting a reall dull knife sharper.
I'm a scout leader and I bought a few of these along with the medium grit stones to teach my scouts how to sharpen knives. I use with drilling-oil. This stone makes sharpening a really dull knife quicker because it gets the blade into form faster and then finish off with medium grit. Great for use and teaching.

The part of this that is the most disturbing is that people actually read this crap – commenting and giving their opinions on other people’s opinions. My wife is pro-Facebook and I’m anti-Facebook.
