A MUST READ If Considering Purchasing A German Shepherd!
I plan on buying a dog when I move; but I haven't decided what I'll get. I've considered a few breeds, Rottweiler, Husky, and German Shepherd. While I still haven't decided, this guide has certainly influenced my decision. For example, I don't know how much time I'll be able to spend with the dog due to work and various other things; and this guide strongly supports the fact that German Shepherds need a lot of time with their owner. Due to their high intelligence and high energy levels- they are not happy or obedient if not given time to exercise and explore.This also explains that if the dog doesn't have the the adequate "play time" it will seek to stimulate itself by tearing up your yard and various other destructive past times. Excellent Resource
As owners of a 2-year old male German Shepherd, we can certainly relate to all of the tips and information provided in this excellent resource and found a few pointers to hone his training even more. The German Shepherd is such a loyal and protective breed it is easy to see why they are one of the best loved dogs today. It is easy to forget for those of us that are fortunate to have them in our "pack" that they can appear intimidating to others, dogs and people alike, so a well-behaved and disciplined German Shepherd is critical to avoiding conflicts with neighbors. We are working with our German Shepherd and preparing him for Schutzhund titling which is an enjoyable sport for dog and handler comprised of Obedience, Agility, and Protection. It was not mentioned in this book, but lots of information is available on the internet, great book overall!!

Excellent Shepherd Specific Training Tips
This is a well-written and well-edited book.There are a lot of dog training method books, and many of them I think are dangerous both to the dog and (eventually) the owner. I like that this book focuses on positive reinforcement.My particular interest is getting my puppy to work on a leash. I found the instructions easy to follow and the training tips practical and straightforward. Henry is still a little befuddled when gamboling about, but he's starting to get the idea, without pulling, pain or negative reinforcement.Good work.

Great For Beginners!
I'm a newbie when it comes to German Shepherds and I had a lot of questions about how to train them. This book answered all the basic beginner questions and answered more that I never even thought of. I found it easy and enjoyable to read. There wasn't a bunch of technical terms and the few there was were very thoroughly explained. If you're new to this then get this book. It's way cheaper than any book I've found at any pet store with twice the useful information.

I'm new to dog ownership and I just adopted an 18-month old German Shepherd Dog from a local shelter. I wanted to learn as much as I could about dogs, specifically GSD's so I ordered this book. My observations are:1) The book is informative and covers I wide range of topics, i.e., training, feeding, housebreaking, etc.2) This book can be used as a reference guide so you don't need to read the entire book if you just need advice on specific issues.3) This book was easy to read and I read the entire book in a few days.4) Although I gained some knowledge from this book, many of the items covered I was able to find quite easily on the internet for free.5) This book was inexpensive and available through Amazon with free shipping, which is how I got it.Bottom line: If you don't mind spending a few dollars, this is a nice reference guide to have. Otherwise, you can find this information for free on the internet.

Is what it says

Although this book is a little more German Shepherd specific than The German Shepherd Dog by Hegewald & Kawich, it's still rather basic dog information. It does however, go into a little more depth about training the German Shepherd which is why I kept this book

The best book on GSDs I have found!!
It has detailed information on every subject of the breed, including history and its differences in other countries. Some of it is generalized information in the training parts and a few other parts but most of all it is all GSD info. It explains many common health concerns and common parasites and how to treat common problems and injuries or what to do if something happens. It has some basic information on more advanced training options like tracking and search and rescue and my copy came with DVD on dog training, though I have yet to watch it, if it was anything thing like the book, it should be good. I would recommend to anyone wanting to know more about the breed and to lovers of the breed that couldn't get enough of GSD.

A great book!
Although I'm not totally unfamilar with the GSD, this book is very useful and infomative, starting with the history of the GSD, which is pretty interesing, alot of facts I never knew. I owned a GSD 10 years ago, and in 2 weeks, will be the proud owner of a new puppy. I believe reading this book beforehand, I am better prepared in bringing a GSD into our home. I HIGHLY recommed this book to anyone who may be interested in owning a GSD!!

Book good, DVD not worth it
As a first time dog owner, I found this book very helpful, it is packed with history of the German Shepherd dog, and I was impressed with the additional information on the White Shepherd Dog (which is what I have). There is a lot of breed-specific information throughout, and good beginning tips on training (though I purchased another book specifically for training also).The DVD that comes with the book is not really that great, it's got no specific German Shepherd Dog content, and the training guide in it encourages you to train with constant treat motivation.Also, not content-related, I really liked the feel of this book, it's a hard cover but opens flat, and the pages have a nice feel as you read through it.
